You can't have an exact answer for this.
Most influential RPG- Ultima: Quest of the Avatar- your actions shaped whether you would win or lose. And it had the first modern tactics battle system. Every tactics like RPG owes Ultima some serious credit for giving a different take on the RPG. Final Fantasy just got people playing RPG's and has a great story but Ultima has the better battle system Most influential shooter- fill in whatever you want here Most influential RTS- probably either warcraft or maybe the original Command and conquer Most influential Platformer- Super Mario Brothers.(period, no questions asked) Most influential game for graphics- fill in game here

I think the most influential FPS would be Counter-Strike.
As for RTS, I would probably have to agree with either Warcraft or Starcraft KEKeke.

original warcraft sucked. WC2 semi-sucked. Starcraft was the first blizzard RTS game to really be great.
first C&C was the best, IMO, but since C&C and the -craft games are completely different, i'd say SC and C&C1 are the 2 most influential RTS games. as for FPS: Doom. you all know it's the first one u played, and that u played it alot, and memorized the codes. "oh no, outta ammo!! IDKFA IDKFA IDKFA!!!" if u dont understand that, u suck. most influential fighting game: Mortal Kombat. i remember when that and Doom were so controversial. anything controversial is usually influential, at least momentarily. which would make GTA one of the most influential games in recent years. the whole idea of having huge, free-roaming environments and limitless gameplay is something that is getting picked up more and more these days, and GTA is choke full of freedom and hugeness.

OMG MOST INELFUTNAIL GAM ISS HALO MAN CAUS ITS COOL AN HAS GUNZ N SHIZ MAN!!!
Now for the serious answers. Most influential FPS would definitely be Doom- it created a freakin' genre, man. Half-life, a close second, didn't create a genre, however- it simply refined and perfected it. |

i know this is a tough thread to really pinpoint an overall most influential game...but if i had to cast one vote it'd be for the first legend of zelda game...we all know it's a great game, but i feel it's so influential b/c it was the first (or at least first decent) game to allow saving....no more 200 digit password for faxanadou or metroid...YAY

Half the responses to this thread crack me up, really bad. You guys have no idea what you're talking about.
Counter-Strike is influential since when? It's a friggin' mod. Half-Life is the influential one in this case because it set the standard for FPS games. CS is a derivative of Half-Life. See? As for Ultima: Where would RPGs been if not for AD&D? Know your roots, young one. Also, Ultima didn't cause any waves, or set any standards, etc. Good game, true, but it went under most people's radar. As for Fighting Games, you can't get more influential than Street Fighter 2. It pretty much gave birth to the genre here in the States. Mortal Kombat was influential to a degree, but the problem is, in other ways. It showed that people liked button-mashey violence with no real gameplay and helped contribute to the downfall of good fighting games. When it comes to RTS games, Warcraft was the influential one. Dune was the first, but no one has even really heard of it as a game. It's sort of like how Final Fantasy gave rise to console RPGs even though Dragon Warrior was the first console RPG. Unfortunately, FF7 is also an extremely influential game because it turned thousands and thousands of gamers onto the RPG scene (for better or worse). It also showed how pretty graphics sell moreso than a good story and workable gameplay system. And GTA was not influential. GTA3 was. There's a big difference. Tetris is also a highly influential game. You realize that more than any other game, Tetris is what most women into gaming played first? (I no longer have the source for this bit of information, sorry.) I think that everyone has played, at least at one point, Tetris. Without it, the puzzle game genre may have never been created.

You completely missed my point. Whether a game is good or not has nothing to do with whether it was influential. Understand? More people played Warcraft. More people were turned on to the RTS genre because of Warcraft. C&C wouldn't have been made if not for the success that Warcraft won (seeing as C&C was made AFTER WC). AND, for the record, the first Warcraft was awesome. I never liked the C&C games.

I think you need to get your resources straightened out. Wolf3D was the first three-dimensional FPS game ever. As in, before Doom. It, however, did not sell like hot pancakes as much as Doom did, thus it was not a more influential game. I swear on my left testicle, Wolf3D came before Doom. |

Hmm...amazingly, upon doing research, I turned out to be wrong (for once). I did a report on Doom a couple of years ago, I could have sworn Doom was first..
Well, your testicle is safe. Heave your sigh of relief. |

Sigh, all you you FPS nuts are wrong, the first FPS, which I dunno if everyone has heard of, is called Catacomb, not Doom, not even Wolfenstein 3D, Catacomb3D. Before those games, you were nuking orcs and other things in Middle Ages times, AND the first FPS with texture mapping. Don't believe me? Then visit here, and click on games. You all lose, Game Over.
My favorite influential game has to be the King's Quest Series. It redifined PC adventure gaming. |

PC adventure gaming basically doesn't exist anymore. I guess the series was influential.. but you can't call a series influential if it couldn't hold it's own genre up. But.. because of the King's Quest series it spawned thousands and thousands of fans. This was at a time though when this was what games were made. There were but, adventure games. I don't think the King's Quest series was anymore than a popular series. Maybe a different adventure game. |
