Default The Pete Rose Dilemma

Should Pete Rose be in the Hall of Fame?
Of course!
He hit 4k+ base hits and that is crazy.
He should've been fined for something as stupid as betting.

EDIT:If mods wanna move go ahead...
i just thought this was good critical thinking. same for the bonds thing

I think he should be in the Hall of Fame. He got a lot more than 4000 hits, and actually more hits than anyone else has ever gotten. That's pretty insane.

It all depends on whether you think morals and the behavior of a player should be included with baseball talen in hall of fame consideration. This will come up later when Barry Bonds has his shot in the hall of fame.

As goes for Pete Rose, he bet on baseball. His own team. You can not do that. It has been strictly against the rules since the black sox scandal of 1919. Pete Rose was a great baseball player, but he was banned from baseball for life, which my interpretation being, includes the hall of fame. Whether I agree with that decision or not doesn't really matter.

Now if I had the choice of letting him in or not, I would not. I think there are way too many people in the hall anyways. I've been to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. They need to put up higher benchmarks, so that maybe, only 5 or 10 people get in per decade. Make it a worthy honor.

He bet on his own team to -win-

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that even if gambling on a game in which you are participating is against the rules. Had he bet on his team to lose, or the other team to win (which aren't the same thing in gambling) then I could see the problem, since he would be able to directly cause his team to lose by commiting errors, hitting into double plays etc.

Jockeys in horse racing are (so far as I know) the only professional atheletes that are allowed to bet on themselves, but are (also so far as I know) only allowed to bet that they will -win- (as opposed to place or show)

I mean...the rule says you aren't allowed to bet on any game in which you are taking part, and he did, and he was punished with a lifetime ban from the sport...under that logic no, he shouldn't be eligable for the hall of fame. I, however, think that the entire rule under which he was punished makes no sense, and that he should absolutely be eligable.
