This happened back when i was trying to lucid dream, failed attempts suck, lol... Its because of some chemical your brain stem releases so you dont actually get up and act out your dreams. If you slip from the dream world into that half awake, half asleep kinda thing, you are conscious, but the chemial is still being released. As for scary monsters and crap, thats probably just what you were dreaming about.

I think it's when you sleep in a place unfamiliar to you, and yeah maybe in a position you're not used to. Like a car, class, etc.

This happens to me whenever I sleep on the couch. It's helpful to induce Lucid Dreaming because its easier for you to realize that you're dreaming. The only thing is that you can't start panicing because then you'll loose your focus.

I had this all the time. Hallucinations are mildly rare, but they do occur because of the half asleep half awake thing. It's more common to have heightened senses (olfactory/smelling, hearing mostly). It's really rare to have a falling sensation (not the common one). It was one of my speech topics in college and I wrote an article about it in high school.

Don't worry though--it's merely a little harmless torture.

No, sleepwalking is different from sleep paralysis conditions (although technically, you really are paralyzed when you sleep). You are a somnabulist. :0

I've heard of a story where someone sleepwalked and did this: drove several miles with his car and then murdered someone. Haha. I find that pretty far-fetched.

This actually happened to me last night. I was just about to fall asleep. I heard a sound like someone was banging on my mattress or something. I figured the cat had gotten into my room again and was jumping up on the bed. But when I tried to open my eyes, I couldn't. I also tried to tell the cat to get off the bed, but my mouth wouldn't open and my voice box wouldn't make a sound. It was pretty freaky. Eventually I was able to open my eyes and talk. I looked around as though I had just came out of a trance. I had actually stumbled into a lucid dream. So I do what I always do in a lucid dream. I stumbled around my room (for some reason I can never get my bearings while in my room), and jumped through the window and flew away. I love flying. I eventually found my way back to my home in jersey for some reason. I landed in the back yard. Remembered that I had never tried something in a lucid dream that I always wanted to, clenched my fists, yelled, and went super saiyan. Seriously, I'm not kidding. It ruled. I lost track of the dream after that and woke up eventually. Fun night.
