John Marshall’s ruling in Marbury v. Madison changed the power of the Supreme Court because Marshall’s ruling established the principle of what came to be called judicial review, which meant that the Supreme Court has the right to declare an act of Congress to be unconstitutional and therefore without any legal authority. Marshall’s decision took away some powers of the Supreme Court, but he increased the Court’s legal authority. Resulting from this, the Supreme Court gained a lot of power in the national government.
