![]() I'm sure you guys know about this book; It's one of the most famous pieces of American literature out there. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was first released in 1925, and was a novel about the lavish society that was at times irresponsibly lacking in morality and values. The story is about the bond dealer Nick Carraway, who visits the area of New York and Long Island for a summer. He becomes involved in the extravagant lifestyle of the extremely wealthy such as Jay Gatsby. The theme of a 'lack of morality' is prevalent in such scenes as Gatsby's frequent parties. Every weekend, Gatsby would host grand parties which consisted of large amounts of people, many of whom were not invited, along with an abundance of excess. In one scene, Nick witnesses a man carrying his hopelessly drunken wife into a car at the end of a party. Fitzgerald used the book to portray his own feelings about the so called, "Jazz Age" in that he himself disagreed with the excess of the high life soirées.
I won't ruin the book for you, but it's a decent read and I'm sure the majority of you will like it. It's a common occurrence to read the story in high school and American literature classes, so you might just read it anyway..

![]() We read it.
I did not enjoy it. I dislike American Literature as a whole. They are bland cliche stories about perserverance. Although the writing style was tolerable. |

![]() Ugh, I've liked 2 American novels. Death of A Salesman, and Tuesday's With Morrie.
The rest have been utter garbage. |

I've seen some bad American writing myself (Such as Farenheit 451. I like the concept, but it was carried out horribly.), but some European literature that I've seen - mostly those in old English - are a bit hard to follow. We have to read for 15-20 minutes in English, and I'm having trouble reading A Tale of Two Cities. Not only because it's old literature, but I have little knowledge of the French Revolution.
