Default Swear Filter

I know that we have the swear filter on the forums for whatever reason that Synth sees fit, but how come there is no swear filter on profiles? I believe that there is more reason to have one there than on the forums, purely because it seems to be that a lot of UUA, or younger people in general, (the myspace crowd), stay around there.

Any chance to get it put in? Or is it impossible due to coding or something?

That would be nice, and would clean up the place a little, but I think it can't be done purely because of coding problems. Actually, on second thought, it might actually work, but it would slow down the site a lot since there are a ton of people searching people's profiles at any time whatsoever, which slows it down anyway. Remember when we got that code to make it so it loads faster? Would that become useless? Anyway, it probably would slow it down, either that or I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about so I should shut up now. I'll go with the second one, and also, I think we should keep this bumped until someone actually sees it and makes use of it.

Good idea, by the way.

Don't double post.

Don't post in all caps. The filter will just keep catching you out.

Go to the newbie forum, stop messing up this thread, I'm trying to give a proper suggestion.

A really good idea too. The trash I've seen on some profiles is atrocious.

I don't think it would slow down the site at all, Matrixdude. It's just a word filter, doesn't take much extra processing to put into effect.

That's exactly why I said, "Anyway, it probably would slow it down, either that or I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about so I should shut up now. I'll go with the second one"

You haven't been a member for even a month. You haven't seen anything yet.

Because people who have been around a short time couldn't possibly browse the profiles enough to see a dozen vulgarities.

Theres also a lot of swearing in the chat, vulgar, pointless swearing at that.

And what if I haven't been a member long, I'm on almost everyday and swearing gets really old, really fast.

Meh, I don't think a swear filter would do much. Though the swear words would be blocked, we'd then see people trying to circumvent the filter through methods like semi-leet (A55), using symbols (@SS), or spacing (a ss). I generally find attempts to swear more irritating than actual swearing.

And if there were to be a swear filter, it'd need a lot of work. I remember back in MP that I had a major problem with typing sentences that included my name because the last three letters of my username, "shi", and a "t" that begins the word after my name.

I don't think we need the swear filter, really. I mean, it is a 13+ forums - one of the few 13+ forums that actually cares about the registration age. I don't see many 13 year olds being offended by harsh language.

Just what I think.

Oh, you mean the children that aren't supposed to be here, do the stupidest move by telling their actual age to the entire forums, and then get banned in the same day?

Meh, I started watching South Park when I was six, who knows what children are doing these days.

The majority of the chat-users have sweared at one point or another and/or they aren't fazed by it. As a chat regular, I feel that swearing is okay in chat. Nobody (at least in recent times) uses it over excessively to the point of deserving ridicule, and if anyone uses any racial slurs, they are dealt with pretty much immediately.
