Tomgirl, apparently you and many others in this environmentalist circle jerk are hopelessly uninformed, so let me help you out.
The earth is warming. There is no doubt about that. Gradually, our oceans are heating, our ice is melting. This is confirmed fact. Unfortunately for you and Greenpeace, that's about as much as we're able to prove. It's true that we're destroying our Earth. We're cutting down trees, killing animals and increasing emissions. However, we flatter ourselves to believe that roughly 200 years of human industrialization is capable of affecting our global ecology, and in such a severe and immediate manner. The Earth does go through periodic climate changes, with the last ice age taking place about 20,000 years ago. We've enjoyed the last 20,000 years as a period of relatively calm and stable climate; unfortunately for us, the time is ripe for another period of warming. The question isn't whether or not the Earth is warming. It's whether or not we're causing it, and if not, what we are able to do about it. The answer, unfortunately, is beyond our reach at this time. Go ahead and ban every industrial facility off the face of the earth; it won't make a damn difference. The Earth will still continue to warm. Are we accelerating that process? Perhaps. But until you environmentalists learn to stop running around screaming at the top of your lungs about the end of the world and provide consistant, credible scientific evidence, the rest of us aren't likely to listen to you- hell, the church has been predicting the end of the world for the last 2000 years, and look how far that got them. |
