You say we're imposing on your right to type with less than decent grammar, while at the same time imposing on our right to bitch about it...
I really don't see what the big deal is with proper grammar. If you just practice it for a few weeks it becomes natural. I have to go out of my way to type badly, and that winds up taking me twice as long to type, so "saving time" isn't an excuse. |

For me there are lines you don't cross. Grammar doesn't have to be perfect, and the message is more important. However, when it's noticably bad; IE huge spelling mistakes and use of slang and shortcuts, it gets annoying.
Big words are just for show, and over-using them makes you sound like a **** as well. A post that is over dramatic with wording really takes away from the message, and for me my motto is keep things as simple as you can. So in my opinion you can go too far in either direction. Not that I have to worry about the second case very much XD The first case is where all the problems are. I think people need to present themselfs in a decent manner, or else they just look like fools. If people don't want to clean up their act and like looking like a fool then whatever, so be it.

Poor grammar and spelling are signs of an uneducated, lazy person. A person whom I have desire to be associated with.

Hmm, since we're on the topic.
It's either "people need to present themselves" or "the individual(but I'd accept they because this rule sucks) needs to present themself." Also, I type MUCH faster in proper grammar than I do in shorthand. In fact, I hate typing in shorthand, because I have to think in order to say a word like 4get or something like that. Rather, I can just type whatever's in my head this way and never really have to, well, think. Also, big words just come out every once in a while, I don't use them to try to sound smart, as I'm sure many others don't. |

It doesn't matter if you like it or not; but if you can't effectively communicate, you won't be taken seriously. It's true that this fact is less apparent online on flash game forums and the like, but that's no reason to disregard it completely. Would you honestly rather read gaiaonline than FFR, where most of the forum regulars use good spelling and grammar? P.S. @carbo: that's not a concrete rule. Quote:

Typos happen. I personally rarely reread what I have written.
There's a difference between a typo and just not knowing how to spell a word/ structure a sentence and making it obvious. I have a flock of words I commonly misspell XD Big words do have their place, of course. It bothers me when people try too hard though. I guess it has to do with personal style and opinion in the end.

I LOVE language (not as much as Shakespeare did...) and I have a rather broad vocabulary and a somewhat eloquent style of typing and speaking, and frequently I have to really conciously tone it down in order for people to NOT think me pretentious. |

Relating to the idea that incorrect grammar makes you look less intelligent.
You guys do know this is a CRITICAL THINKING thread right? I think the major problem is that people come in thinking they can type horribly and expect people to understand and respect them. I guess what I'm saying is that in any other part of the forum, less than standard grammar is somewhat acceptable mainly because you are supposedly talking to a bunch of incoherent 13 year olds anyway. So in this part of the forum, I guess I just expect more out of people but thats just me. |

I like to use proper grammar because, as Reach said, the message is more important. Sometimes, deplorable grammar interferes with your message. Then the message is not relayed properly and the reader(s) perceive it differently. Then the reader(s) react and reply differently from what you want.

I try to make my grammar as good as possible, and since learning to touch type (thankyou american school) shorthand typing is actually much slower because as ToshX said, I can just type whats in my head without having to think about how to make it shorter.
The only thing i (look, like right there!) often do is not capitalise my Eyes, I guess its because Microsoft word self-corrects them and so its made me lazy, although I only forgot to do it once in this post and I did see it straight away ![]() However although I have pretty decent grammar I dont mind too much if someone elses post doesn't. I easily overlook missed apostrophes and typos because I know I do it too, unless the whole post is written in texting language (omg lolz srsly!) then I dont mind Last edited by sherbtail; 12-31-2006 at 07:56 AM.. |

That's not necessarily true. Some have just used good grammar throughout most of their lives and can't stand it when someone types "badly".

I think there should be a forum rule that states that we should use proper grammar for a few reasons.
1.I enjoy it because it helped my writing in school. 2.My teacher is always nagging about people abbreviating every thing. 3.Your going to need it in the future for a good job if you don't already have one. |
