Default Racism - It isn't dead

Alright, so I've been watching this video and I was actually quite surprised at how some of the things still remain the same way they were so many years ago.

It cannot be described how wrong it is that this was still televised, even if it was a long time ago. Kids should NEVER be exposed to something of this intensity under ANY circumstances. Even adults shouldn't, but it isn't QUITE as bad if it begins when they're older. I'm sure you all know it still exists, but I was surprised at the extent of it.

I understand that most people would not want to watch an hour and 30 minutes of this(I mean, it is racism, after all), but it is a really interesting documentary. The subtitles and text are in French, but throughout almost all of the video, people are speaking in English. Skip around and you'll see what I mean by some of this stuff is pretty surprising. I'm sure some people will have some comments about it. You may notice that a lot of it is based on older stuff, but, as the video goes on, it seems to get into more modern problems.

I think one of the most shocking things was that they said that the Swedish government didn't even know what was going on, and when the found out, they allowed the radical groups to have concerts and meetings as long as they didn't commit crimes. The fact that 14 year old boys are being exposed to this because they felt like "white power" had to remain dominant in the next 10 years is just.. really uncomprehendable. Shocking stuff. I didn't get through the whole thing but I"ll watch it later when I have more time on my hands.

If anyone happened to watch the World Cup, France is suppossedly having a huge problem with racism right now. During games (not only in France), bananas have been thrown at players of African origin. Not only that, but some countries in Europe are -notorious- for their anti-Semitism (France being one of them). However, racism can never be completely wiped out until all races/religious view each other as equals.

I agree with angel. Racism will never be completely taken from anywhere. You always have those ignorant people who sterotype
I wish for just a second everyone could see eye to eye.

Oh, of course, it is technically impossible to stop some form of racism. It will always exist in one form or another, and maybe even in everyone in some form. If you really stop to think about it, you may look at people SLIGHTLY differently based on their race(no discussion needed here). Think about this, what race are the majority of your friends? Likely, the same as yours. It is rare for it to be balanced in such a way that you have more friends of another race than you do of yours, but if it can be acomplished, it really is an amazing thing.

A large part of this racism issue is that, although I know it is stereotypical, some people maange to fit in this stereotypes. Of course, it's not even CLOSE to the majority of the people, but there are still a few people that actually do fit in it. Usually these people are just people that either like it that way or were pressured into it to be "normal." Racist people will see these people and assume that the rest of that race is the same way.

I'm sure that it would be a huge improvement if we could first change the way we act a little to be more standard and not based on "race." Of course, this gets better as people grow up, but it certainly still is there. I'm sure the racism increases as adults, though, unless the kid had a really terrible experience or something.

The reason I even brought this up is because just the other day, one of my friends said "****ing (racial slur)!!" Although I was not of this race, I was direcly offended by this because I think girls of that race are pretty hot, intelligent, and just flat out nice, to be completely honest. Not to mention the guys are pretty cool. I guess stereotypes could let you guess which race, but that's not the point of this conversation.

I believe racism will exist until there's no way TOO be racist. People will never see eye to eye on some things, but if nothing happens that should deplete the world's population for a million years or so, then we'll all pretty much become one race.
Edit also: We won't have the same religions or opinions, but racism is specifically the belief that one race is superior to another. (Racism doesn't apply to religion, does it?)

There are already ways to be TOO racist. Case and point: the KKK. Lynching people seems a bit extreme to me. Not that they do it anymore, but still. They have rallies and crap where they spew forth hundreds of racist philosophies.

Tosh does have a point, though. I tend to hang out with people of my own race, but I'm considered 'unique' at my school: only Jew out of 3,000 students. Or, at least, the only one who openly wears a Star of David. That's how segragated my school is. We only have a few of each race and the majority of kids at my school are either Catholic or Christian.

And trust me, racism applies to religion. I can't tell you how many times I've been called a (and I HATE to use this word) kike by both students and teachers.

Yeah, there's no real way to get rid of it, but if we reduce it, it'll make a major difference. On this level, though, I'd say it's more of a problem of comfort than a thing of thinking one race is better than another. Of course we're going to be more comfortable with someone that's similar to us. Say you were talking to someone on the internet you didn't really know. One has a similar interest and another has nothing in common with you. It's pretty obvious that there's more than a 50% chance you'd choose the person who has more in common with you.

As for religion, I don't see why everyone is so bothered by it. Even I, as an Atheist, have had people bother me about it and try to make me believe in their god(s). It's not as if my thoughts change their "reality".

But teachers can get fired for saying anything that feels insulting about religion and race if directed at a person :/ Of course, if it's some lesson about religion, that's different, because then it's likely someone getting offended at people not thinking the same way they do.

Racism will be gone forever!

When I am ruler of the world I will start an Ad campaign called "interracial babies now!" that promotes interracial marriages and births. This way, when we're all finally screwing to the point of no return, there won't be any racism anymore; we'll all be one race!

You know the point of this was to see the extent it exists in, not to try to make some revolutionary change, right? We all know very well what's possible and what isn't.

We all have a little racism in us.

Over racist groups or meetings are annoying as all heck. Honestly now...Racist groups need to get over themselves and learn we've all been put on this little dump we call earth. So learn to share.

Racism will always exist. It's ridiculous to think it would ever go away. The thing I don't understand is that in America, blacks, asians, hispanics, basically everyone that isn't white is allowed to show pride. But when a white person wants to show their anglo pride (not supremacy) it is frowned upon and called racist. Oh and Affirmative Action is also a load of crap.

Racism ceases to exist when the concept of race ceases to exist.

End of discussion

Since you know, race is a concept that we make up.

Humans are humans, we are all the same race.

When I saw this topic I immediately thought of the situation in Malaysia at the moment. Although what I am about to describe isn't racism in the way most people use it (people treating others in a derogatory way because of their race, usually associated with African-Americans) however it is possibly more shocking as it is on a much larger scale.

In Malaysia there are 3 major ethnic groups: Malay, Chinese and Indian. Although each group has been in Malaysia for a very long time, there is in fact a situation of large scale racism by the Malays against the Chinese and Indian. By law, no Chinese or Indian person can be in power of the country. For many types of business it is required that a Malay is a named shareholder or partner. There are also a number of benefits available to Malays which are not available to either the Chinese or Indian such as business tax breaks and monetary aid when purchasing houses.

Another case of racism in Malaysia concerns the police force which is a job reserved for the Malay. To illustrate the racism dealt out by the police I will use a story which is commonly used by Chinese and Indian Malaysians when describing the situation to a foreigner.
If a police patrol sees a Malay guy walking down the street at night, they will stop, pick him up and take him home. If the same patrol sees a Chinese guy walking at night, they will pick him up, question him and drop him back on the street. If they see an Indian guy, they will pick him up and drop him in Jail. This may sound like some kind of "English, Scottish, Irish guy" joke, but it is in fact 100% true.
Other examples of police discrimination include planting of drugs in Chinese and Indian cars during check point stops and obtaining bribes for "discovery" (aka creation) of law breaking on the road from Chinese and Indian Malaysians.

When reading this it is important to understand that there is much corruption within Malaysia, however most of it is directed towards negatively discrimination against Chinese and Indian Malaysians.

Nice contradiction there.

Yes, race is a concept. However, applying the concept under the definition of 'race', we are not all the same race.

AP is right.

Racism isn't going anywhere.

Oh, it's going SOMEWHERE.

Notice how many famous people are now African-American compared to 50 years ago and how Hispanics are now treated poorly on a social level with other races? At least, it's better than it was not so long ago in America. The real racism people have to watch out for is the racism directed at the Hispanics.
