Default Prohibition.

Why the are some drugs illegal? Would it do better for prohibition to be abolished? Personally I see more arguments for prohibition outweighing the ones against it.

-What you do with your own body should be your own damn business, and not interfered with by the government. It is a victimless crime.

-Prohibition does more harm than good. Stigmans attatched to convictions can prevent employment and education.

-Making drugs illegal just romanticizes them. They are the forbidden fruit, which is temtacious.

-The current drug war budget is somewhere around $30 billion dollars. This doesen't include the half million prisoners incarcerated for prohibition charges.
It's estimated that taxes could be reduced by one-third if the government decriminalized JUST marijuana.

-When has there been a death reported by cannabis?? There hasn't been one in the last 100 years.

-Two other LEGAL drugs have have been the cause of half a million deaths in the u.s. alone: around 480,000 from tobacco and 80,000 from alcohol. Although these make up 20% of annual deaths in the U.S. and preventable by prohibition, it shows inconsistancy to reduce harm, and laws themselves. Why is these legal, and marijuana not?

-Prohibiting drugs makes the market for them to inflate. This high cost is more likely to make the dealer to commit crimes to make money for more expensive drugs.

-"Defendants convicted of selling crack cocaine receive equal sentences to those convicted of selling 100 times the same amount of powder cocaine." I smell racism. The majority selling crack are poor and black, while those selling cocaine are not.

-Often times illegal drugs are purchased in the underground market. Drugs are cut with substances to increase supply, sale potential, ptrofit, or user addiction. "This can be dangerous as even though numerous illegal drugs have very low toxicity levels (low potential for overdose) and low addiction potential. Their safety status can be altered dramatically if they contain other chemicals the buyer is unaware of. This can increase the potential for unexpected effects, overdoses, and drug dependence. For instance, tablets sold as MDMA have commonly been found to contain methamphetamine as the primary active ingredient or include methamphetamine in addition to other drugs.[17]methamphetamine has much higher comparative addictive potential than MDMA, and a higher risk of overdose as demonstrated by its LD50s." Hmm

-The prohibition of drugs have caused a major block to research. This can limit the amount of information on drugs, beneficial to the user.
