Infinity = not a number, just a symbol meaning "never-ending", as per the actual sign itself, if you were to trace it, it would never end, no?

This thread is now about mag-rails.

8 never ends either. Neither does 0. 6 and 9 both can not too.

I have another QUESTION: What if there were sticks layed out a foot away from eachother going on in a straight line forever... and inbetween each stick are 3 pebbles. Would there be more pebbles and sticks? the other way? same?

Same.

EDIT: Neither you nor Squeek should go to Quantum physics class...

Uh, with regards to the very strange stick question...

Do it five times and see who's winning.

-...-...-...-...-

Looks like there's not even any logic required to make this assertion.

Now, back to the discussion at hand: Calculus and how pointlessly crappy it is.

Calculus is the reason I had to change majors. I went to class, took notes, did homework, studied. THIS IS THE ONLY CLASS I EVER TRIED HARD IN. And I failed three times. Not only that, but I had five more math courses after that--one of them being Calc III!

Then I take Astronomy II and pass without even attending a single lecture.

Now that I'm in IT, I go to all of my classes but I never take notes. I never do homework. I never study. Heck, I have a class in ten minutes and when I go, I bring my laptop because the teacher is too boring to listen to for three hours.

I have straight As. AND I'm in a Math course. Discrete math. To me, this is one of the most applicable maths to anyone's career. Ever.

Spyke, why would I? Science classes are just as stupid and pointless as math courses. The reason I didn't go to Astr II lectures was because A) The professor knew nothing and only read things straight off of a powerpoint slide and B) she tried to teach us utterly pointless things about astronomy. WHO CARES about the mass of a small particle and its distance from earth and how fast it travels and how many stick into the earth and how hot it is and ugh.

The science course I'm in right now is the greatest course ever designed for science. It's just the need-to-know information on every science. It NEVER goes in-depth on any single topic because it's pointless to do so.

Obviously you do not understand the significance of the question completely ignoring the fact that the stick pebble sequence goes on forever. Correlation: which is faster? 1.4c or 1.2c?

What's a c.

Ok, so it goes on forever. That only means that the ratio of sticks to pebble increases as it goes on forever.

What's your point.

Actually, that argument does hold some merit.

He's saying that there is clearly three times as many stones as sticks, and yet mathematicians would say NO THERE'S THE SAME AMOUNT LOOK HERE'S PROOF:

x * inf = inf
3 * inf = inf
1inf = 3inf OH SNAP WE WIN

But as my 1^inf argument showed, logic gets thrown out the window when it comes to infinity.

1.4c = 1.2c
The speed of light is not a relative one, time bends around it. Therefore, the speeds are the same and time is different when experiencing either of the speeds.

hey geniuses

light has absolutely nothing to do with infinity

it is a constant

shut the hell up already and stop bringing it up

I read a book that said that someone proved the number of perfect squares equalled the number of positive integers, since each square could be mathced up to one positive integer. Since this was proven, a 3:1 ratio would be nowhere near the difference between the scarcity of squares and positive integers, so in a 3:1 ratio, they would be the same.

What about at the same point of a single cycle.

Like 1 cycle is:
...-
2 cycles are:
...-...-
3 cycles are:
...-...-...-

At the end of each cycle, the pebbles always outnumber the sticks so as the cycles approach infinity, since approaching it is possible, it really just means as it keeps on going, there will be more pebbles than sticks, always.

Hey.

You're only proving the reasons why I hate mathematicians.

So, keep going. You're only alienating yourselves.

If a pattern continues to grow more and more different, they can never be the same. Only in a messed-up mathematician's head are they the same.

You guys are so amazingly elitist that you use """"FACTS"""" to prove things that are otherwise logically different.

And some parents wonder why their kids hate math. This is how professors act too. MATH IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING EVEN THOUGH IT'S ILLOGICAL.

Logic: 0.999... repeating is not equal to one.
Your stick problem always has more pebbles than sticks.
1.4c is not equal to 1.2c. Look, how can a 2 equal a 4?

Math: 0.999... repeating is one. Don't try to argue, infidels.
Turns out that even though there are more pebbles than sticks for all real numbers, they're the same number in the end. Don't try to refute this, I have numbers!

tokzic is right, inf = 3 * inf

however, I think you could say that the pebbles approach infinity faster than the sticks.

"1.4c is not equal to 1.2c. Look, how can a 2 equal a 4?"

It's not quite as simple as that when dealing with light. He chose a bad example. If I misunderstood and his c was representing a constant rather than the speed of light, then it depends on if c is positive or negative.

Logical proof:

.9~ < x < 1

Solve for x.
