But then my lady friend got pissed off I was playing FFR instead of playing her. Then for the rest of the night she played the 'Only want me for my body' card and I didn't get to sleep with blankets that night.Originally posted by thesunfanreplacing ifitypedhisnameaslargeashisnamesuggests, iwouldgetbanned with theelongatedaustrocanadian3000 (pop).Originally posted by reuben_tateTitle: Popsicle Three

Re: I don't feel like planning a levelranks strategy
this is actually turning out to be really interesting. I get to see how files progressed throughout the 10 years FFR has been around.
the first file with colored notes was contradistinction (maybe not, there seem to be more than a few files from around this time that were deleted), and based on how many files after it were all blue notes, it looks like either the community didn't like the colored notes and synthlight agreed, or the community really liked colored notes and synthlight still kept making files all blue.
another cool thing I noticed was that once synthlight stopped putting his files into the game, colored notes came back. maybe he was accepting defeat? idk.
there were a ton of pretty generic techno tracks around this time. FGJ and SGX were super popular. it also seemed like libertine was stepped solely to break away from the whole generic techno thing. not sure if it worked very well lol.
i didn't really care much for ffr because it seriously runs like shit on windows. i just recently set up my computer to dualboot (turns out there's a native grub booter on my motherboard rofl) into linux. I'm using linux to study for IT certs, but it also runs FFR flawlessly so... I figured why not :PLast edited by choof; 02-23-2014, 08:38 PM.Comment

Re: I don't feel like planning a levelranks strategy
I have a vague memory of reading that NeoMAX was actually the first level ever to have colored notes. I think the reason any levels earlier than NeoMAX have colored notes is because they were colored retroactively after the new noteskin had come out. But I guess people decided this wasn't such a hot idea and didn't color all the levels, nor did they see it fit to uncolor the levels they had colored.
Of course, it's been 6 years, so somebody may want to verify that.Comment

Re: I don't feel like planning a levelranks strategy
if that's true, I wonder why contradistinction was the only one changed... hmmmmm
for some files that have patterns higher than 16ths (vizions, epic, etc), what's the reasoning behind not coloring the patterns properly? was this an issue with dwi, or with whatever was used to convert files for FFR? I also distinctly remember gradeus being all red during the section that's 12ths and 24ths now.Comment

Re: I don't feel like planning a levelranks strategy
Contradistinction wasn't the only one that was changed. It looks like NeoMAX was released on 4-20-2004, while The Essential was released on 4-12-2004, and it has colored notes. I'm pretty sure there are a few more in between The Essential and Contradistinction as well. You may just not be that far along yet.
As for why certain levels behave as they do with the colored notes, here's a post of mine I dug up from 2007 about Delirium. Post of notable interest:
This explains Gradeus, and the others.not intentional. it's from the early days of the noteskin, when we didn't have colors for anything but red, blue, and yellow. so any 12th, 24th, or 32nd arrows showed up in one of the other 3.
which is what led to red note syndrome on songs. most of them were fixed by Shash a long time ago, but a few weren't. Delirium is one of them. RATv2 is another. I think Wish has 1 or 2 notes as well.Last edited by Solomine Gray; 02-24-2014, 05:50 PM.Comment

Re: I don't feel like planning a levelranks strategy
grinding today and tomorrow, just got to Straight To Video
did anyone, back when this file came out, think that this was foreshadowing something? bland song (definitely not the first MSI song I'd step), and the file was really fucking boring. nothing interesting about it whatsoever. but a lot of the rock songs that were stepped after this were pretty much the same thing. bland song, boring chart.Comment

Re: I don't feel like planning a levelranks strategy
foreshadowing only in the sense that there were more rock files to come I guess, haha.
probably not the first MSI song a lot of people would step, but that might be the only one for which permission was obtained. I think the notechart was also supposed to be easy and simple in order to be suited toward new/casual players.Comment

Re: I don't feel like planning a levelranks strategy
i guess my thought was that it was needlessly repetitious. even if it was stepped for new/casual players, the patterns could have been way more interesting
also I'm really glad jx got better at simfiling because man some of his older files are... bad lolComment

I can't get through a good file, let alone some piece of crap that isn't even synced properly.
