Re: What did you give up for Lent?

My mom used to make us give up junk food every lent, not that we ate much of it anyways. In that same vein, I unknowingly started my drastically reduced diet the first day of lent, in hopefully not a vain attempt to get rid of/ameliorate my nerve damage which seems to have actually gotten worse being gluten free.

since the most intelligent posters are usually atheists and will try to make you feel bad for being christian

Re: What did you give up for Lent?

Regardless of your beliefs, I don't think you need an excuse to better yourself. Everything from New Year's Resolutions to Lent just seems like a silly, self-justifying way of postponing making yourself a better person. Why wait until Lent to stop being late to everything when you can work on your punctuality all the time (example)

p.s. There's a big difference between agnosticism, atheism, and militant atheism. Not everyone who doesn't believe in God is a hater lol

Re: What did you give up for Lent?

Lent isn't about self-improvement. I remember homily's about making Lent not something to better yourself but as something materialistic to give up. I suppose if it's all about bettering yourself to be a better christian then there's a point about that, but it's not like anyone who's christian is expected to drop all their wordly lives and become preachers or something. For example, if you gave up watching TV for lent, would that make you a better person? Or if you went whole hog and prayed for 40 days, dropping the rest of your life, you'd still be practicing lent. But you know that if you just prayed for the rest of your life that's ultimately not a good thing. Fasting during lent often lends itself to things that would be like new years resolutions, but that doesn't mean the point is the same as a new year's resolution. If you felt that giving up swearing, 4chan and soda was pointless for lent, you could easily give up more if you were practicing lent.

Beyond that, there's also a sense of community when you do something as a group. Individualism isn't what any religion is about, they're all about sharing and being with the group, practicing prayers together and doing good deeds as a group, etc. Sure, you could choose to pray for 40 days straight at any time of the year, but you're just on your own then, not being a part of your church or group or following the rituals set aside by your religion.

Which brings me to another thing, ritual. I like ritualism. I was raised and brought up in a church, and even though I don't believe a word of it anymore, I can still enjoy the experience of going to church. People join clubs and sororities, but you don't ever see anyone bitching that they're stupid and have no point like I've heard a million times from people who are catholic or christian, but who don't go to church.

Re: What did you give up for Lent?

I find nothing wrong with religion at all, i mean.. Some people have amazing friends that are there for them, and others rely on their "God" which isn't a bad thing IMO. I mean when you're down and just feeling like shit, you have something to look forward to, some call it false hope, others call it faith. It's just a matter of beliefs. Atheists believe the world started from NOTHING, and became what it is today. Nothing+nothing=a planet? No idea really, i didn't study galaxy algebra. Either way, all of our beliefs are flawed a bit.

PS: Atheism is no more, and no less than a religion itself. Religion definition:a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects.
