Triplets = purple notes. A triplet is a triplet because it takes 3 of them to equal one quarter note. You count them as such:

"one - trip - let"

Or if you're lame you can count them like:

"trip - l - et"

Three sixteenth notes bunched together does not equal a triplet. Call them triples or something.
