What is with profile votes? Why the hell do we have them?

I just looked at somebody's profile and saw this:

Uhh. All but one of those "comments" are about profile votes. You vote me, I vote you back. Let's get as many friends as we can. I mean, profile votes. God, this whole myspace thing is getting out of hand. Whoops, I meant, FFR thing.

If it were genuinely about the aesthetic appeal of profiles, there could be contests run, instead of a mutual exchange to raise a number on one's profile.
