Default What exactly is chaos...

...on the StepMania difficulty pentagon thing?

For example, what should you put into your stepfile to give it a high chaos rating?

I started thinking about it the other day and I figured out the other four just fine, but I couldn't place this one.

The more notes a song has that are anything other than 4ths or 8ths, (blue or red) the more chaos it will have.

I'm not sure, because I'm stepping a m1dy song right now that has plenty of 12ths and the chaos is reading about .086.

I tried to look at it more literally. I thought about what, in a stepfile, would constitute chaos, and the first things that came to mind were BPM changes and stops.

Also, what about triples and quads? Considering that in DDR, triples and quads mean you have to use hands, I think that would constitute a lot of chaos if you have more than a few of them in the song.

But you're probably right, because I've noticed that a lot of 16th streamy songs had high chaos ratings. Just throwing some things out there.

Trips and quads (hands) do not affect chaos rating whatsoever. I'm going to make a song that's all 12ths to see it's chaos rating now, to solve this mystery.

Edit: In SM alpha 20, 12ths do contribute to chaos. I doubt this has been changed in later versions.

More technically, chaos is some factor times the number of notes (i.e. jumps do not contribute more than single arrows) snapped to 12ths or higher divided by the total length of the song.

For example, max600 has higher chaos than max300; in fact it is precisely 2x the chaos (because max600 is exactly 1/2 the length of max300). The same principle goes for Air and Freeze.

Max300 and 600 have no chaos at all since chaos is 12ths and up. Hypothetically, 300 would have more chaos.

edit: Actually, you're right, 600 uses the same colors.

Max300 actually has a small amount of chaos -- right before the stop, and the jackhammers at the end. (Extra note: They are not really 12ths but actually '6ths', but there is no such thing as a 6th snap so they're just 12ths with every other note removed)

They're the green and purple arrows on this stepchart.
http://www.ddrfreak.com/stepcharts/s...&Submit=Submit

Max600 is the exact same steps as max300 except sped up to 2x the rate (you can find it in keyboard collab I), since it has only 1/2 the music length it gets double the chaos rating.

EDIT:

Um, I always thought of chaos is when the song changes bpm, bombs, and technicolor of the arrows (which I wouldn't suggest doing, it makes you look like a newb in my eyes[unless it goes with the song, e.g. Insect Digestion Melancholy Stepped by the RaiRai]). I hope that isn't to confusing
BPM changes themselves don't do anything to the chaos, and neither do bombs. Arrow technicolor is basically arrows snapped to things higher than 12ths -- which increase chaos.

Also note that if a song is really slow, (let's say Bag [65 BPM]) it will actually take more chaotic steps to raise the Chaos rating.
