Video Games - Nightmare Fuel Edition
It's that time of year again. What better way to usher in the Halloween season than by talking about the things that scare(d) us in video games. What gave or gives you nightmares? Was it a piece of background music? A character? A level? A type of boss/enemy? Specific or general, share it here.
Also, it doesn't have to be from the horror genre of video games. Nonhorror games also apply. |

Re: Video Games - Nightmare Fuel Edition
When I was a kid, I always freaked out in Clue for the SNES when the music for the weapons played, especially the music for the rope. I remember I used to hide under the covers. Nowadays if I play it, I still get a chill up my spine... probably some of the creepiest video game music ever made in my opinion.
The first time I played Resident Evil 2 when you go into the interrogation room, when the licker jumps through the glass... jumped out of my seat since I was not expecting that, and the glass shatters pretty loud too. To this day, I still jump a little even though I know it's going to happen.

Re: Video Games - Nightmare Fuel Edition
Playing through Duke Nukem 3D and the Doom series when I was 12 were some of the scariest gaming moments I've had (heart racing throughout the entire level and "holy shit!" moments when you run into an enemy you've never seen before).
The first time I ran into this^ guy was probably the single biggest scare I've had playing games that I can remember xD. The way you first encounter him is extremely unexpected and his scream is like...FUC! Also Wolfenstein 3D bosses..for some reason those were borderline pants pissers When I was even younger I can remember playing through Super Metroid and being in a mildly stressed state, with boss fights damn near giving me heart attacks. The whole area of Meridia used to freak me out, such an eerie atmosphere. Other than that, not many other games that genuinely scared me. Playing through Demon's Souls/Dark Souls was a particularly stressful experience because dying was actually really bad and going through parts you haven't seen yet was incredibly intense. (ghouls make me jump a lot too)
And engine car sounds in Far Cry 2. I agree with the underwater levels, but the scariest is when you have to plunge into an abyss and you can see around at all. Chilling sensation in my spine.

Definitely Jolly Roger Bay in SM64 going underwater with that eel. And for some reason Clinker from BK64 first time I played wayyyy back as just a rental. Resident Evil 4 still hard for me to play, never beat it (as a kid I was never really allowed to have any of the "scarier" games so that doesn't help me any). The sea hats from Windwaker omg

Re: Video Games - Nightmare Fuel Edition
I have a few musical links for you guys. The first is from the indie game VVVVVV. It's an 18-second track that's not anywhere in the game, but was supposed to play when you encountered a hidden easter egg. This next one is from Doom 64. I've never played any of the games in the Doom series. Still, this has to be one of the top scariest tracks I've ever heard. |
