Re: What laptop/desktop brand(s) do you currently use?
I bought my first one, in 2009, for college to take some notes during class, and at the same time, powerful enough (i7 1.6 GHz, 6 GO of RAM) to play some games (Trackmania, Minecraft, Stepmania). It's 4 years old and still running very well and I use it everyday.
The second one (Mac - i7 2.3 GHz, 8 GO of RAM), I was forced to buy it. Everything in my school runs on Apple so to avoid any compability issue, they want you to buy a Mac.
It's fast as hell for a laptop but there are some huge downside : no CD/DVD burner (wtf) and no ethernet (network via wifi or a thunderbolt adapter)...
I prefer my first laptop.
I plan to build my own desktop, but I don't know when. Probably when my Dell laptop dies.

You can easily make a "facebook machine" for $200-$300
Mid range gaming rig can be had for $400-$700
You can put together a high end gaming computer for $800-1200 (this is what I did, spent $1150 2 years ago and still running strong)
Or you can spend upwards of $10k for top-of-the-line everything
Re: What laptop/desktop brand(s) do you currently use?
Got an asus laptop and a custom desktop. The asus was picked because of good specs and a 1920x1080 resolution which is really useful for when I was working on art projects (be it 2D or 3D) because you don't want a screen where the program's interface already takes up 3/4th of the screen. My custom rig is a very decent computer (spent about 850 euros on it) with two 1080p monitors of 24 inch and 22 inch and some other peripherals.
