Re: Amateur FFR Scores!
Definition of AMATEUR
1
: devotee, admirer
2
: one who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession
3
: one lacking in experience and competence in an art or science
The root of the word is amore - meaning love
In general - an amateur is a combination of definitions one and two above. Definition three was tacked on later as a derogatory term because such people lacked the skills of professionals.
Here's how I see it -
It takes a good amount of skill (compared to those who have never played before) to AAA anything over a three. It takes a considerably greater investment of time and energy to become practiced enough to AAA a nine or higher, I believe you have passed the point where the game is just a 'pastime' for you. It becomes part of your life, and just something that you do - part of who you are. There are only thirteen difficulties in the game after all, and if you can AAA over have the songs in the entire game (average just over 8), then you are past the socially constructed concept of definition #3. #1 and #2, however, do not reference skill - and in general speech, an amateur is not considered to be top of the line. In skill alone, I see a vast gap between the expectations of an 'amateur' and 'professional.' Why are we trying to draw a definite line? There is certainly a middle ground of experienced players.
So in generally accepted language, an amateur lacks skill but loves to participate in the activity. In the end, past my own consideration, I consider myself an amateur because I love trying to get better at this game. My scores are amateurish compared to some, but mind blowing to most new players.
And I am experienced - in GT terms I am ranked 859th out of 1.7 million players (ever). Even considering multies, that's still the top 1% of everyone who has made an account on the game.
So I don't consider myself and amateur in skill, but mainly in my admiration of the game. I think people incorrectly equate the word with 'novice' who do not understand the full meaning.
