    I Am Legend

    **SPOILERS BELOW**

I don't see a thread for it so I thought I might as well make one for it.

Saw it last night. I felt that it satisfied my need for that movie. It was good, but not spectacular. Didn't expect it to follow the book very much and it followed it more than I thought it would until the end. Kept my attention the whole time, very suspenseful. I liked it.

    8/10?

I would've given it at 7 but that extra 1 is for Will Smith being awesome.

I thought it was amazing. Seeing it in the theater made it so much better because of the sound system's effect on the explosions and such. I'd give it a 10/10. Kept me on the edge of my seat.

              I've heard it was pretty good. I don't know, I haven't seen the end of it and I watched the last minute of it because I had to go in and clean the theatre. We sold out for the entire day... ^.^;

                    Re: I Am Legend

Why does everyone like this so much? It was slow, had a cliche plot, and used cheap thrill methods.

                    It was OK at best.

                      I loved this movie!
It didn't use cheap thrill methods alone, it combined them with heavy suspense through the entire movie... Thats why if felt so slow. It was straight up terrifying at times...

The plot, though cliche, was realistic and works well with the movie.
Plus it was funny, sad, and amusing. Whats not to like?

Which is exactly what cheap thrills are. Anyone can shoot a scene where it's quiet or dark and you know something is gonna pop out. It really is a lousy and uncreative (but effective I guess) scare tactic. I will admit there were a few truly scary parts however, one of which was when he was attempting to get back to his car as the light diminished and the dogs were about to catch them.

Also this is just a personal opinion but the scene where he was in the dark abandoned building looking for his dog was dragged out way too much. You can expect a suspense scene like that to last a certain length but this really pushed it. Personally I don't find stuff like that enjoyable at all, especially at that length.

Realistic? That doesn't make it any less cliche. Works well with the movie? ....well, duh, it's what the movie is based on.

Apparently in the 1971 version, the people were able to talk and make any sort of communication, making it less of a "Resident Evil" type movie. Though it was better than the normal thrillers that Bahamut was talking about:

                            - It successfully jumped right into the action without you feeling too rushed and like you missed something.

                            - Will Smith really did play the part well, especially in the last big scene. It added a lot more character and personality into the movie than you would find in a normal thriller or suspense film, SPOILERS LOL like when Sam ran into the dark building. You could sense his terror as he was entering and hear it in his voice. It was much better acting than I've seen in any of these movies, maybe even enhanced because he was risking so much and was so terrified at what he was doing to make sure his best friend was safe, even though it was a dog.

And for those reasons I would give it an 8/10

                              Re: I Am Legend

I went in wanting to not like the movie, and I ended up highly enjoying it. They effectivley portrayed the mental deterioration of man who was alone in the world and failed at his jobs - not just militarily, but he failed as a father and protector, as well. Will Smith did an excellent job with the internal anguish.

It's a shame the third act completley dashes everything that had been set up. With a half smile, a wink, and a Shrek reference, the movie expected to win over the group that came not to see a bleak movie, but a movie where there is always hope. While the original novel was a testament to insanity and how times can so greatly change and alienate, the movie is more about perseverence. The humans, I found at the end, were more of a threat than those that had been exposed to the K-virus. They talked to no end about rebuilding the world, but at the end of the day, it was no longer their world to rebuild.

The first 2/3 were very well done, and the movie could have effectivley ended at that mark, making the actual ending feel highly tacked on.

Still, I liked it. Glad I caught the matinee, and I'm awaiting the inevitable remake when I turn 50.
