A Super Smash Brothers on the DS......Could it happen?

I brought this topic up at VGDC, and I feel that it's a great subject for discussion.

So far, I've defeated the main purposes of the DS games that I own. Now, about the only things that keep the DS entertaining until I buy some more games are either computer races on Mario Kart* or the rare occasion that my friends bring their DS's along as well. When my brother brought the N64 home for the summer, countless hours were spent playing SSB+, and not that many other N64 games. Seeing how SSB is one of Nintendo's best selling franchises, wouldn't it make sense to make a DS version? I mean, it made the 64 cooler than it already was, it is about the only thing that keeps the Gamecube out of the refuse bin, and has Wii fans as giddy as little school girls. Since it doesn't seem like a handheld isn't going to be made any time soon, why not make the DS last for ages as well?

And yes, I've done my homework. I haven't seen any signs of a SSB on the DS.

*It's on 150 cc in hard mode. It gets boring sometimes.
+Whether my brother was playing with me or not, it always entertaining.
Freakish brought up some concerns, the main ones being:

    -Screen is too small.
-How would the top screen and stylus be used?
-The game would have to be rebuilt (The fear that the polygonal design on the original would be too complicated).

    Our responses:

-Jump Ultimate Stars is similar to SSB is almost every way, and it did fine.
-I'm thinking that the stylus would be used for menu options, and might serve as a good item-throwing engine in battle.
-Just look at the New Super Mario Bros. went. The design shouldn't pose any problems.

Seeing how FFR is much more popular than VGDC, what are y'all's thoughts?

edit: I know that this isn't Critical Thinking, but don't just stop by and say "It sucks lolol". Explain why you think the game would be successful or a failure.

I think that would be a horrible idea. Think about it a "New Super Mario Bros." version of samsh, you have to take into account all of the other characters from the non-mario universe. And the battles would not be as fast-paced as the consoles. SSB should not be reduced to a handheld game.

My DS is pretty efficient as far as speed goes.

I think the thing that sounds most awkward to me would be the switch from the control-stick to the D pad. SSB is a game that takes every direction and how fast you push the stick into account in many situations. With just the DS's D pad you only get 8 directions as opposed to an entire circle, and there is no 'soft' or 'tap', there is just 'push' I noticed this difference mainly in Animal crossing Wild World when my walking direction felt so much more limited using the pad instead of a control-stick.

Iv'e seen a topic like this before. SSB on the DS would be a terrible idea. The game is to much for the DS to Handle. SSB is made so that you can have lots of people go into full out war. SSB on the DS is bad because the DS's screens are tiny. If you had more than 2 people fighting it would have to cut off half the screen.

It could happen but, it also could and most likely would suck.

The game would have to be built entirely from scratch in order to work out. Jump works because it was built specifically for the Nintendo DS (I own both versions and it's a hell of a lot of fun too). The screen size and camera focus would be my number one concern of a straight up Nintendo DS version of what Smash Bros. is on the N64/Gamecube. Being portable, it does also make the multiplayer aspect that the game thrives off of a little less accessible unless you want to take it to Wi-Fi and play against people you can't see or hear.

i'm not really sure, a smash game is more for consoles than for portables, i think the DS is capable of making a remake of SSM64 though, but it would be pointless

It could happen but it would be very similar to the N64 version of SSB. I saw someone emulate SSB on a psp and it didn't work that well, and a DS just isn't up there yet.

And New Super Mario Bros. was an awful game.

It might be a slight problem. I mean, in the 64 version, one push did a walk, and a double-tap did a run. You could keep that the same for the DS.

Also, walking would be very complicated if the pad was a walking engine.

......It's only four people. The DS has more than enough running power to have four people fighting (In some online games, they have eight people fighting). And the screen wouldn't be an issue. Let me show you a few screenshots from Jump Ultimate Stars.

As you can see, they have more than just four players fighting, although it would probably cause overcrowding in SSB, which is why I brought up the idea of only four players fighting.

It could happen but, it also could and most likely would suck.
Please explain. Same to you, Zageron.

Yes, the concept of seeing nearly the entire level would probably have to go. I have no problem with that, but I'm a tad confused on your explanation of multiplayer difficulties.

It could happen but it would be very similar to the N64 version of SSB. I saw someone emulate SSB on a psp and it didn't work that well, and a DS just isn't up there yet.
As far as I know, the DS has the same running power as the 64, but is more efficient.

Think of the controls. That's the main problem I see. Like for me, i think the contols would have to be dumbed down so much it wouldn't even be worth it if I tried to master it cuz there'd be like no learning curve.

and playing a game where everyone can easily do everything is no fun imo
