Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers

I recently finished my Eagle Scout Board of review (this past Tuesday) and only have paperwork to send by national to get my Eagle patch.

I also know a few people from FFR who are Scouts.

If you are any type of Scout, could you post your unit number, rank, and any other information you'd like to share?

    For an example:
-Boy Scout, troop 649 (Clarksville MD, I believe.)
    -Soon-to-be Eagle Scout
-I work at summer camp at camp Spencer up at whiteford, MD.

Also, even if you aren't a Boy Scout or anything. At least in my case, Scouting used to be considered a kind of nerdy (If thats the right word) thing to do, but now it is considered a great accomplishment. What do you or people you know think about Scouting?

I think Scouting is pretty cool (though I am not a Scout nor will I ever be) but when my cousin became an Eagle Scout, I told my friends and they all laughed. I don't see what's so funny about it but I can imagine why they laughed.

Scouting was really fun, I loved camping trips and the goal oriented environment. The skills you learn and the friends you make is like nothing else.

        It's a shame I quit before I was 2nd class.

Never knew what happened in OOA though, quite the mystery.

My friend has a few months to go before his 18th b-day before he gets his Eagle Scout. All he is doing right now is all the paperwork and shiz.

I really, really hated being in Boy Scouts.

PS - I'm an Eagle Scout.

PPS - I didn't even care to hold a ceremony or anything like that. I sent in the paperwork, got approved, then never did anything related to scouts ever again. I gave away my old uniform and crap and probably lost all the documentation and awards somewhere.

The only worthwhile experience I ever had during my time was the week I spent on a deserted island and the two week backpacking expedition in the Rockies.

(Pppps - this doesn't show up for me, so I didn't know if the edits took. If it looks like I'm repeating myself, that's why.)

                  I quit after First class.
It got extremely bad for me because I wasn't that "good" enough to do everything that everyone else did perfectly. I got made fun of every troop meeting.

Re: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers

Don't worry about it. Scouts is a joke. The entire thing is like one really big suck-up contest to see who can make the adults happiest.

If you have friends whose parents are troop leaders, then you're set. I personally had enemies whose parents were troop leaders, so I had the worst time ever. The only fun I ever had in the ten (more?) years I was involved occurred during the long excursions: one was a week on a deserted island and the other was a two-week backpacking expedition in the Rockies.

But anyway, I figured it all out when I got older. Scouts is just this military front that tries to start kids young to be trained ranked officers. It's really quite sad.

Have fun in your ultra-conservative gay-hating christian environment!

Re: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers

Oh yeah, that was another thing.

Boy Scouts assume you're a Christian, no matter what. Sure, at big Scouting events, they have tents for every religion, but in regular meetings, they pretty much assume everyone is a Christian.

And yes, although it seems odd that a large collection of boys / men who just like to show off how "great" they are (badges, medals, etc) could possibly be 100% heterosexual across the world, they are extremely anti-homosexual.

By the way, I got the absolute minimum number of badges and requirements when I got Eagle and nothing more. My childhood best friend managed to get the record number of badges and awards from the same troop and is now studying to be a U.S. Air Force... something or other. He's at the Air Force Academy, so Spec might even have seen him around once or twice.

                        Not like that matters.

                            EAGLE SCOUT

Yeah the christian thing was annoying, but I got all my friends into scouting when I was in middle school, so we would always go camping or hiking together on the weekends, and summers were really fun at the scout camps. After my friends fell out of it (one moved away), I sort of forgot about it for two years, then picked it back up late in my 17th year, and got my eagle project done just in time for my birthday.

I've been in so many troops, I don't even remember. The one my friends and I were in was 663.
