This season's (good) new shows.

ANN has done this on their own, but I'll add some extra tidbits along to what they have here along with my recommendations quoted.

This is it! 10 of the hottest new shows to hit the airwaves in Japan, with story details and capsule reviews! Nana, Ouran High School Host Club, Kiba, Air Gear and more!

Let's go in the order I saw them.

    OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB

Middle-class Haruhi Fujioka is the only student at the uber-exclusive Ouran High School whose family isn’t filthy rich, and when she breaks an $80,000 vase, she’s left in the hands of the Host Club, an enigmatic group of six impossibly good-looking and ludicrously wealthy young men who mistake her for a boy. Initially they plan on putting him – er, her – to work to pay off the debt, but once it becomes clear she – er, he – is a hit with the ladies, they make her a full-time member of the Host Club!
Hilarious show. There are scenes that have you laughing in every minute of the show. The art style is superb as well and transitioning between what I call "simple animation" (triangles for eyes and suchnot) to regular animation is smooth and effective. I also really like the ending theme.

Important note: No, I did not fool you into watching a Yaoi. Do not judge the show based on its intro which would really convince you otherwise.

    THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA

An effortlessly practical and down-to-earth guy on the surface, Kyon used to be fascinated by ghosts and demons and ESPers, until he found himself in high school and shelved those fantasies for stark reality. On the first day of class, he meets Haruhi Suzumiya, a beautiful and intelligent – but extremely eccentric – girl who proclaims on the first day that she isn’t interested in “normal humans”, and unless you’re a ghost, an alien, or a psychic, she doesn’t want to talk to you. Kyon finds himself strangely drawn to the girl, and winds up being instrumental in the forming of her new club (created after Suzumiya joined all the other clubs for precisely one day and abandoning them just as quickly). Their goal? Well, Kyon doesn’t know yet, but with Haruhi in charge, anything goes.
Weird show. Episode one does not make any sense until the very very end. The show doesn't even really begin until episode two. But the first episode is necessary and hilarious. The main characters are all unique and odd in their own ways.

    UTAWARERUMONO

Hakuoro has lost his memory after succumbing to serious injuries; but thanks to a elderly woman and her granddaughter Eruruu, he is nursed back to health. His face is covered by a strange irremovable mask and he occasionally sees beastly visions. Eruruu now cares for him as he becomes accustomed to the village and its inhabitants who all bear strange ears (the women have tails too). Though these people venerate the forces of nature, desecration of an alter forces them to take drastic measures to preserve their lives from the wrath of Mutikapa-sama, guardian of the forest.
It's good. It's cute. Just watch it.

Lost interest writing midway through. Did you find out?

Add your own picks that you feel are awesome this season.

Re: This season's (good) new shows.

Aww... and I thought you meant REAL shows.

So I'll give reviews of what I think are the good REAL shows from the past year...

    How I Met Your Mother - CBS - Monday @ 8 or 9
This comedy is the next friends. It is told in the first person from Ted to his children 20 years in the future about how he met their mother. So far, this so is amazing. Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious; if you liked him in Harold & Kumar, you'll love him in HIMYM. Alyson Hannigan is awesome. I don't want to spoil anything about this show, so just accept that it is the best comedy sitcom on TV and hopefully will be around for years to come.

    A+

    Prison Break - FOX - Mondays @ 8
This show is perfect to precede 24. Just like 24, it is non-stop action for 43 minutes each week. The story of Michael Scofield's plan to get into prison to break his death row inmate brother, Lincoln Burrows, out. He has to keep from being killed from the other inmates, keep his crew in line, prevent the rest of the inmates from finding out, all while avoiding the guards ever watching eyes. Also, Veronica Donovan is trying to prove that Lincoln is innocent, but someone high up in the government is working to prevent it. An excellent show and a must watch if you enjoy 24.

    A

    The Unit - CBS - Tuesdays @ 9 or 10
This show started recently and follows an elite black budget special forces unit on their missions around the world. It is average as far as content and plot, but Dennis Haysbert alone makes this worth watching. Plus, there is nothing else on on Tuesday nights. I like the fact that the army men's wives play a significant role in the show. It adds a different aspect to the show and the plot as well as actually developing a plot from the start of the show, instead of shows like CSI that took multiple seasons before devoping a plot.

    B

    My Name Is Earl - NBC - Tuesdays @ 8 or 9?
Starring Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee immediately drew me to this show, and keep me watching it every week. I can't get enough of Jason Lee, period. Basically, Earl wins the lottery then gets hit by a car. He learns about Karma and realizes he has to change his life and be a better person. So he forms a list of everyone he's done something bad to throughout his entire life and sets out to repay each debt. The format allows for an unlimited number of episodes, which is always a plus in a sitcom. The characters are interesting, especially Jamie Presley's, Earl's ex-wife. I could see how this show wouldn't appeal to some people, but I recommend giving it a shot.

    B+

    Courting Alex - CBS - Wednesdays? @ 8 or 9?
This show was on a few times, and hasn't been on in the past month. It may have been pulled. It wasn't very good. Jenna Elfman stars as a work-crazed and obsessed lawyer who works for her father. She starts dating the owner of the bar across the street. she is annoying and way too quirky. I wanted to shoot Dharma, and I wouldn't mind kicking Alex in the face a few times. Not to mention she is SO WAY TOO ****ING SKINNY. Her level of anorexia should not be allowed, anywhere. She makes Calista Flockhart look fat.

    C-

    Freddie - ??? - ??? @ ?
Starring Freddie Prinze Jr, its the story of a guy named Freddie who is rich, owns half of a restaurant in Chicago (and is also the chef), and supports his sister, sister-in-law, niece, and grandmother who only speaks Spanish. His neighbor and best friend, Chris, lives across the hall. He owns the other half of the restaurant, is a trust fund baby, and is completely clueless towards real life. But at least he's "hot" and gets lots of chicks. This show is fairly mind numbing, but for some reason I keep watching it.

    C+

I think those are all the new shows that I've watched this season. I've seen every episode of each of the above shows.

Re: This season's (good) new shows.

School Rumble season 2. The first season aired back in fall of 2004, and after a rather inconclusive ending the fans demanded more. Now they are getting it. School Rumble at first seems like a typical school romance series, but it takes all the old cliches and does them so incredibly well, with such amazing comedy, and such wonderful characters, that it breaches the laws of awesomeness. I wouldn't hestitate to call this the best show of the spring season. The only drawback is that season 1 is pretty much required viewing if you want to enjoy this. However, this isn't as much of a drawback as it is a fact - season 1 is amazing as well, and should be watched by everyone ever.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. Happy happy moe moe serial murder horror mystery show. Subs for this are releasing at a somewhat glacial pace right now, but the first episode was interesting, to say this least. This show has a LOT of potential.

Other shows this season that may or may not be worth your time:

Soul Link - Military cadets train on board a satellite which is boarded by terrorists and HORRIBLE MUTANT MONSTERS. Interesting premise and good character designs that had some potential, but has been completely crippled by the lowest production values I have seen in an anime in a long time. I continue to watch it for some reason, although I am not expecting much.

Strawberry Panic - Girl transfers into an all girl's school where EVERYONE EVER is a lesbian. Premise sounded interesting enough to me, but the poor character designs and pacing have made me drop it.

Ray - Ray is a superhumanly amazing surgeon with a secret - she has X-RAY VISION. And the hospital staff consists of a bunch of nurses who are capable of taking out mobs of gangsters, and a director who has an eye patch, a two foot long beard, and a ****ing PEG LEG. The show even has one of my favorite VAs hilariously miscast as the lead. Too bad the second episode decided to be serious, and as a result was incredibly boring. I dunno if I will watch more, but at the moment I am leaning towards a no.

The Third - Sword girl with talking tank side-kick does odd jobs in a post apocolyptic world to earn money. First episode wasn't particularly engaging, but it had very high production values and some quite nice sword action. I', not really sure on it, but I will watch more.

Magical Pokahn - A female werewolf, witch, vampire, and android live together and try to figure out how the human world works. Character designs border on loli, and the comedy is both cute and hilarious. This show is targetted towards a specific audience, so it probably won't appeal to many. I could do without the rampant fanservice, but otherwise I love what I have seen (which isn't much, as subs for this have been more glacial than HiguNaku's).

And that is all I have watched so far. This is a very good season, with a high number of both high quality shows and niche titles that I find myself enjoying. I just hope that some of these shows which display much potential don't fall flat on their faces.

Re: This season's (good) new shows.

For Ouran High School Host Club (OHSHC) it's pretty funny shounen title, I really like the first episode so I'm thinking of watching the others.
But as for The Meloncholy of HARUHI SUZUMIYA, it's rad. I've seen first three episodes, which is more like I've seeen the first two episodes, because I don't really understand the deal with the first episode, other than it was cool. Laser eye beams!
As for that last one... I dunno, is it really worth losing the precious space on my hard drive?
I'm really liking three shows right now. Air Gear, xxxHOLiC and Ergo Proxy.

              Air Gear

is show more or less about inline skating. Just with Air trek(AT) instead of skates, they're two wheeled and have a little motor in them. X-treme!
Really shounen-y with "I'm not strong enough for this guy, I'm gonna train. I beat him. Oh No. Another guy stronger than me!" kinda plot ( i think). But with really cool characters and a super-rad ending theme song, should you really care?

              xxxHOLiC

I really liked the manga, so I thought that "Hey the manga was cool, so must be the anime" I haven't been dissappointed yet. But with only three episodes there isn't much to say, yet. But all signs point to pretty good.

              Ergo Proxy

Self-Aware Robots? Blade Runner?! Heh. It's pretty cool, besides the fact I don't know what's going on. but, that's how I like my anime! Confusing and looking pretty! That's pretty much it.

And seeing as how two of my choices were on their list I'm thinking I'm pretty good shape

Ouran High School Host Club - Lots of roses, yellow, blue, elegance, but it's just mostly humor. Favorite of these so far.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Haruhi's personality is something completely new (well to me at least). The personalities of the other characters are more common, but done in a way to make it enjoyable.

Air Gear - I saw the first episode and it was okay. I'm probably not going to watch the rest of it unless I run out of things to watch (which I doubt is going to happen). The soundtrack was rather cool despite the fact that most of it was punk.

Disgaea - Never played the game (although I REALLY want to), but I watched the first episode and I liked it quite a bit. I'll probably end up watching the anime before I play the game.

May edit with more if I watch different ones.

I like the Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, because the order in which things take place don't make any sense. Episode one wa very random and episodes 2 & 3

Oh, and I have watched HiguNaku 2 and 3 now. Very good, even scary stuff. One of the better horror mysteries I have encountered. Everyone go watch it so you can see Rena with hatchet-kun.

I just love how Haruhi keeps throwing things at you unexpectedly. It's funny, but certainly not mindless - it seems to be very well-crafted, and I like that in an anime.

Originally posted by SPOILERS FOR HARUHI 1-4 - Don't read unless you like having its uniqueness spoiled :/

Episode 1 was a great and funny purposely amateur-looking home video thing parodying anime at the same time.

Episode 2 was a more proper introduction, with plenty of weirdness about Haruhi to discover.

Episode 3 wasn't really out of left field, but we did get to see how INSANE Haruhi can be to get what she wants. Plus that weird addition at the end hinting at more.

Episode 4 seemingly skipped some episodes to throw you into a barely explained scenario a bit later. The directors knew exactly what they were doing, and harnessed the confusion perfectly by inserting just the right lines meant to make the viewer go "wait, WTF" and still somehow make it seem like it could plausibly be a regular episode from later on.
Every time it surprises you with something new... and they handle it quite well. With good humor, too. I am enjoying this series.

As for other series, I agree with Squeek and Kefit. Another series worth mentioning that nobody has yet is NANA... the story of two girls, both named Nana, who meet randomly and become friends. Their dynamic is interesting; I'll be following this one as well for sure.
