    Serenity

This movie is based on a show called "Firefly", which I found to be particularly good. Fans of the show were very hardcore about getting it put back on the air after its cancellation, but sadly, that did not happen.

Instead, it was made into a major motion picture by Universal.

Since the news was announced, I was fairly nervous about non-fans being able to enjoy the movie and how critics would feel about it.

    That was, until today.

It has 87% Fresh Cream of the Crop on Rotten Tomatoes, which will most likely settle down at 75-80, which is incredible, considering that this movie has such a small appeal.

But, it opens tomorrow, and I will see it. I'm going to post a review on here, but it will be heavily biased towards the movie in all likely-hood, and I just think that it would be dandy if the kind folks on here saw it as well and said what they think.

I mean, I've been following this for 2 years, and since the show came out, I registered at websites as MalReynolds, a character on the show. So, I enjoyed it immensley and am very excited about this film.

    This is all.

    RE: Serenity

I've been trying to get Tass to watch the whole series before I drag him to the movie, but since it comes out tomorrow and he's only seen 3/14 episodes I may end up going by myself. (Or I may not. He has this thing about me not going to see movies by myself.) Either way, I am SO PSYCHED for it.

I am also pissed off. Because all of my friends in Berkeley are going to see a midnight showing of it tonight, in approximately 3 hours (which means they might be there already, standing in line) for FREE. I am so jealous.

        RE: Serenity

I hear, about the movie, you don't have to have watched the entire series. There's a pretty good catch-up in the beginning.

I had a chance to see it, a few months back at one of those pre screenings, but I opted to see Land of the Dead... My reasoning was, there would be plenty more pre-screenings. I haven't had the opportunity since, and have been kicking myself, because a friend of mine who has never seen the series comes up to me when LOTD was over, with a keychain.

He thought the movie was awesome, but the editing hadn't been finished, and I was just kind of shocked that he of all people went to see the movie and that he liked it.

He gave me the keychain as a late birthday present. Joss signed it.

        Anyways, yeah.

YAY I SAW IT. SPOILERIFFIC RANTING BELOW.

It was good. It was really good. It was like a double episode of the show, only if it were 2 episodes they would have done much less than they actually did. So I'm glad it was a movie. I really like mostly-sane River, I kind of wish they'd gone more into what they did to her other than enhance her psychic power thingies so that she goes nutso. Also: GODDAMMIT MAN WHY DIDN'T YOU LET MAL AND INARA AT LEAST HAVE A KISS, IF NOT SEX.

Seriously. At least Kaylee's getting laid. (And River's watching, that voyeur!)

Tass's question: How can there be a sequel? They told the world about the evils of the Alliance!

And my answer...it's JOSS. He killed off his main character and the show still went on in Buffy! HE CAN DO IT AGAIN.

                Holy Crap, spoilers:

Simple: The alliance isn't ruined. The parliment still believes they did no wrong, and will most likely be after Mal in a vengeance trip... It's going to start a new war, most likely... And that is more than decent material for a sequel.

Oh, damn, Wash! Of all the people to kill off... I mean, crap!

                End Spoilers.

                          I saw it.

                          Spoilers.

It was okay. I felt like the cinematography was quite choppy, and it was obvious that different people worked on it because it didn't mesh together like it should have. There were numerous styles and the suches, and it kind of distracted me. Although I do admit that there were some gorgeous shots, and incredible scenes, however there were a couple of times where I found myself asking, "Who the hell was in charge of that camera?!" Like random dropping of the angle, or too much freaking racking focus, etc.

I liked the fight scenes. Especially River's.

For not having seen the series before, I felt like I was clued in just fine. I'm sure there's a lot that I don't know to the certain situations, but I was able to catch onto things just fine.

The costuming was amazing. The colours and tones blended together, etc.
The music was amazing as well. Quite enjoyable.

Overall it was pretty good. I was really sad when Wash got killed off though I liked him.

Oh, one thing that I think they could have worked on a bit was character development. Because out of nowhere, the brother dude is all: HEY HAYLEY LETS HAVE SECKS!!! and she's all HEY I'M HORNY BECAUSE I HAVEN'T BEEN LAID IN YEARS, OKAY!
That scene bothered me a bit.

But other than that, it's pretty good. I enjoyed it.

                          End Scene. I mean Spoilers.

TERRIFIC SPOILERAGE FOR BOTH SHOW AND MOVIE!!

                            NightSonnett:

Obviously you haven't seen the series. That's okay, I think the movie worked almost as well without it. But that's probably why you didn't get the Kaylee (which is her name, not Hayley) and Simon thing. They've been dancing around the courtship rituals for 14 episodes and now that they might die, they realize that there are more important things than propriety, etc. As for Kaylee's being horny, she gets hired during a tryst with the previous ship's mechanic and we don't see that she has any sort of love interest (minus the one with batteries) at all for several years thereafter. They're too busy running away from whatever jobs they have to deal with love or sex. I think she's got a right to jump Simon's bones. And he's been too busy hiding with River (not to mention losing all his money) to find a hooker or a girlfriend, and Kaylee is ADORABLY hot. I'd do her.
