                                      Couldn't he have simply poured the beer itself on the snow?

                                      Alcohol's freezing point is far far lower than water's. So it would act as a mild antifreeze. Also, what comes out of the body is mostly hot water - much of the alcohol gets absorbed into the bloodstream.

                                      Another alternative would be to simply eat the snow, and urinate it out. If hot water is what you're going for.
