    Why forums are popular

    im quite interested in reading the many threads in the FFR forums, but i rarely post any myself. i think i enjoy observing the many different character traits unique to each individual, much like i enjoy watching people when i am forced to go to a mall. i surprised myself tonight when i noticed how much time i spend simply reading, and i asked myself why that was. ive yet to formulate an answer for myself, but the question rises: why are forums so popular in the first place? AIM and other such forms of communication are convient methods of striking up conversation, but usually (at least for me) i know the person that i am talking to, whether they be friends at school or family members. Forums tend to be gatherings of random people from across the globe, usually. could it be that online characters form through the forums, or is it simply the human spirit to unite?

      I have noticfed this myself. I dont have many posts, but i spend most of my time in the forum just reading what others have to say about certain topics. Its gquite interesting how some people act on forums. *cough* arch0wl *cough* acts like he is 35 years old, but is only fifteen. Some people you really cant know until you read what they have to say about popular issues...

          Forums are a big community. After time it turns into a "town" type of place where everyone knows eachother.

          But why we stay? Not sure.

              we stay for the same reason people stay in their town, or school..... you like being there, you like the people there you talk to, you know you can get the answers to your questions there, you have friends there...

                  It's an easy way to communicate to a lot of people and it's generally not as dumb as chatrooms are since stupid people don't post on forums as much.

                          Squeek pretty much nailed it. It's a place were we can get together with a bunch of other people with similar intrests and pseudo-chat...but this can be more entertaining than chatting, for a couple reasons. First of all, it's not a real time system, so you can respond to something that somebody said yesterday. Because you don't have time constraints, more people are compelled to type in coherent sentences and use correct spelling and punctuation, unlike in chat rooms. Beyond that, it's partly the tight knit community of a smaller forum that I prefer as to say, 1up, which is larger, or something like Neopets or Go-Gaia which is gigantic. I know everybody here, and everybody knows me. Somewhat like living in a small town.

                              And FFR has a very smart group of people. Jewpin, Spec, and I (and a good amount of others) all have the shred of intellect that really keeps the Critical Thinking going. It is so nice to be able to talk about complexities of the universe in a GAME chat. Go show me a Natural Selection forum that is as good as this one. (No offense Freak)

                              The site is diverse enough to bring great people into the mix, making the experience that much more well rounded.

                                      Not only is it one community, it's many. I personally come here not for the game but for the forums (because by "highspeed" is really slow). I've noticed that there are different rings of people who participate in different forums. Kenzya (not trying to single anyone out) rarely ever posts in here but is a regular in Chit Chat.

                                      All in all it's like a bunch of families living in seperate homes within a town. We all function fairly independently, but some spill over into other houses as guests. The analogy works well in many cases, bravo.

                                          ive found that many people who enjoy forums also MMO type games. although i think the aspect of the forum which is set aside from an MMO is that in an MMO there is usually a direct goal that is being attempted at, such as raids and instances. i myself have always found the group effort required in these to be appealing, but semi social anxiety disorder and paranoia is problematic. but in a forum, wat is the goal?

                                          hmm i suppose the little town idea is appealing. i tihnk im beginnign to understand that aspect of a forum.
