I guess people might think of you as weird for playing it after your 30s, but if that's what you want to do go for it. I guess too old is only when you're incapable of playing it anymore.

I've been mentally giving myself the I'm too old for stuff in my head for a lot of things but honestly, if you're still capable of doing it and enjoy it why stop? I'm kind of getting to the point where I'm saying fuck what society thinks. *shrugs*

People thought I was weird for playing it when I was 15, before the boom in popularity that came with DDR SuperNOVA and Guitar Hero. If most of us cared about opinions we probably would have never started playing.
I had every intention to continue the game until it got boring or I was too frail a human to continue; I was just going to be that old 70 year old bitching that he had to play on Light 4-Panel now because the ol' arrow stompers weren't quick anymore, but with my ankle as it is now I think I have about ran my course.
People usually don't stop playing because they're too old, they stop playing because they decide to priorize other things in their lives. Playing competitively can be a factor on stress and enjoyment, but it shouldn't stop anyone from playing at least casually/for fun. If you're happy with how you're playing overall, it probably shouldn't affect you before a long time. I believe a 60+yr old person could still play DDR/ITG any day, as long as that person can physically handle it. What needs to be keep in check is not if you can play the game, but if you keep yourself in good enough health to do so. Someone who's like 15yr old can go overkill while playing and hurt themselves in a way that make them stop playing. So, I'd say that age is pretty insignificant and that your health and how you feel about playing will be real deciding factors.
tl;dr: There's no age limit, the only limits are your health and yourself.
Ultimately it depends on what you want out of the game. The best age range to play the game would be before late 20's (I know Rynker is in his mid 20s and Trevor is in his late teens and they've both passed an ITG 21) if you want to grind the game hard and pass songs on the very high end of the difficulty spectrum.
The issue with DDR and ITG compared to keyboard play mainly comes from the following:
- Your overall body plays a much bigger role in your performance. Genetics also influences improvement rate for both, but having larger body weight puts much more stress on your legs, sweat can drip onto the pads and make your feet sticky etc.
- You need a large space to have a machine with the pads as opposed to just having a table with a keyboard.
- Machines go for several thousands of dollars as opposed to keyboards that could go for a few hundred.
- Maintenance is a much bigger issue for DDR and ITG as opposed to Stepmania, which just requires a laptop/computer and a keyboard. For DDR and ITG you have to change sensors in the pad, raise the panels to be more playable/make sure that the brackets don't kill your feet, etc.
Overall DDR and ITG are very expensive games that aren't accessible to most people. This is why most of the player base age for ITG is either very late teens or 20's.
I think 30 is an age where the body starts getting to its peak bone density which could potentially impact performance on the game, although I admittedly have no evidence of this. So this would probably fit into the "too old" question from a physical standpoint that improvement will be harder once you get past the 20's age range.
Everyone can play these games for good cardio exercise, but it also depends on the difficulties you're playing and how frequently you play.

I'm in my 30s and I still casually play whenever I can. I own nearly all if not all versions of DDR on PS2 and my local Dave & Buster's has a (moderately working) X2 cabinet.

i got back into itg recently and im 21. there are plenty of cringy autists that give these kinds of games a bad name and that's the only reason anyone ever asks this question. seriously. it's like that one fat guy at a melee tournament whose ass hangs out and smells. people on the outside see that one guy and lump everyone else in with him.
that being said, if i were over 30 i would probably just buy a cabinet of my own so i could play in my house and not be that weird old guy that the arcade
