As far as standard fonts goes, those do the job pretty well if you want to try something different than default system fonts :








I usually tend to go for Baskerville when it comes to serif fonts :

The worst font imo is Bleeding Cowbys. The guy himself said he "based" his font on Oklahoma : "@ Kodoichi: I always told people that I based myself on Oklahoma (a free font) to create this one. Every designer has influences. This font is just a revised version of his font. BTW, writing that I am an ass as a comment makes you look really smart, congrats!"
Compare it yourself and you'll see it's a complete rip-off.

I quite like Calibri but I've been using Open Sans more because of the Apache license. For monospace I'm fine with Courier.

Not sure about worst, but something like Bleeding Cowboys (mentioned above) is really egregious.

I like Calibri. I've also been using the DS-Digital font as the timer for my splits.


For worst font, that title would definitely have to go to Bleeding Cowboys, imo.

I still go back to this book every now and then when I'm absolutely torn with typeface choices as a designer

it just sounds to me that you don't like geometric sans-serif typefaces in general. century gothic is a safe choice for that classification, since it's widely available on something like 90% of all windows pcs. most geometric sans-serif typefaces require purchasing licenses in general, since widely available sans-serif system fonts are mostly limited to humanist or grotesque classifications.

Honestly, if you don't quote this, you probably won't be able to read it.

I used to Verdana everything I could, it felt more relaxing to read.

it simply doesn't get better than this. it has a timeless fractured style that is introspective yet still allows itself to be a little showy. you don't mess with a classic.

Harabara is literally the bane of my existence when it comes to fonts.

I use it way too much in the stuff that I make.

I mean its horrible but I guess it has some appeal for being really quite stupid

as for the best font, theres one I use fairly often called Manifesto which is pretty cool

The font I use pretty much everywhere is Palatino Linotype. Don't know why, just stuck for some reason. If only for that, it's probably the best in my eyes.

I don't think there's any 'worst' font, pretty much every font has a use somewhere. Even poor, maligned Comic Sans is useful in posters for illiterate children.

Just to add onto this, the fact of the matter is that a very large majority of grunge typefaces all use a pre-existing cut/design, usually from something considered "classic." Another example is Birth of a Hero where ITC Avant Garde is used as the base before the guy literally shits on top of it. Frankly, all of this guy's work is the same.

As mentioned by TheRapingDragon, Comic Sans actually was designed with a practical use for illiterate children. When children are in that learning stage of trying to distinguish between different letterforms in the alphabet, it's much more difficult for them if the teaching material being used is in a monotonous sans-serif design like Helvetica, especially once it comes down to reading point size. It might sound stupid, but the intentionally angled strokes of certain letters and the overall asymmetrical design of comic sans makes it easier to read for children.

The underlying fact as to why it's hated is because grown ass adults have been using it for the wrong reasons. The ultimate kicker is that comic sans is available on about 99.9% of all windows machines, so when people are looking for a "fun", "playful", or "friendly" looking font, that's usually the first one they end up on out of everything.
