The Sony Hack: Cancelled Release of "The Interview" on Dec.25

Quite a big thing happening on the internet & on news as of late but there hasn't been any real thread on talk over this over here on FFR, so sharing for the people that haven't heard of it or seen info being thrown around regarding it.

Sony cancels the release of The Interview, a film about a fictional plot to kill North Korea's leader, after major cinemas decide not to screen it.

With theater chains defecting en masse, Sony Pictures Entertainment has pulled the planned Christmas Day release of "The Interview." U.S. officials have reportedly linked a massive cyber attack against Sony to North Korea, which is at the center of the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy.

Sony Pictures has cancelled the Dec. 25 theatrical release of The Interview, saying it made the decision after most exhibitors slated to screen the film decided not to in the wake of threats to attack theatres. The studio has "no further plans for the film," a studio spokeswoman told Reuters.

In a statement, Sony Pictures said it was disappointed, but respected the decision not to screen the movie and "share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theatre-goers."

There had been some speculation that Sony might offer the film for in-home viewing, but a Reuters report quoted a Sony spokeswoman as saying the studio has "no further plans for the film" in response to a question about whether a postponed theatrical release or a video-on demand release might be in the offing.

U.S. theatres weren't the only ones to react — all 17 Rainbow and Magic Lantern Theatres in Toronto cancelled screenings of The Interview during the Christmas holidays, after hackers behind the cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment threatened moviegoers with Sept. 11-style attacks.

A spokesperson told CBC News's Ioanna Roumeliotis the cinemas aren't sure whether the decision will be reversed.
There are also plenty of news-related articles reporting that North Korea is actually funding & behind the cyberterrorist attacks against Sony, with informants including the NSA, FBI, CIA, and multiple other American Officials.

U.S. officials have concluded that the North Korean government ordered the hacking attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment.

What's everyone's thoughts on this? I honestly would have liked to see the movie myself as it was gaining a ton of attention in news, but I guess it could have been seen as a bad move to attack someone in high power.

According to sources, it really feels like the United States is being pushed into a position to publically denounce North Korea. I have no idea what could be gained from this, but it's pointing to something nasty, especially considering the hack started as early as mid-November and is still ongoing. Hackers claim to have stolen over 100 terabytes of data so far, and exposed over 250 gigabytes of info to the public.

More articles and related press info can be found by searching either "The Sony Hack" or "North Korea Sony Hack" on google.

I'd be amused, quickly followed by mortified if a bad Seth Rogen movie sparked an international war.

I really hope it doesn't... there's definitely better ways to deal with North Korea.

If Seth Rogen & James Franco started World War III that would definitely be one for the books.

I can see them right now joking about it while smoking a jay and then just awkwardly stop laughing/play it down.

Looked up some other sources, according to a Sony Spokesman, “Sony Pictures has no further release plans for the film,”. Could entail that they won't be having a theater release for the movie, or could be scheduled to a later date, but no one knows as of right now.

A timeline of stuff that has happened everyday since the start of the hack:

Here is a timeline of how the devastating Sony cyber attack unfolded from Day One to present. We will continue to update as it evolves.

Re: The Sony Hack: Cancelled Release of "The Interview" on Dec.25

I think that Sony's ultimate move should be to release The Interview with hardcoded Korean subtitles directly to news outlets, free download on the internet, send it private torrent trackers, anywhere they can send it.

They've evidently already resigned to losing the millions they put into the film by cancelling it, so they might as well use it strategically for PR: releasing it would put public attention on the film instead of the hacked data.

What a let down. I was really looking forward to this. Why exactly are we giving in to North Korea? What could they possibly do?

I've heard that awhile ago they pointed missiles at United States, people got into a panic, and the U.S. released a statement saying that the missiles they're using don't even have a long enough range to be shot at them. The result, North Korea buys bigger missiles and then aims them towards U.S.A.

Edit: Hollywood people on twitter are weighing in.

not supposedly, it's been confirmed for a few years now, at least
they wouldn't attack the US directly, they'd probably attack SK first since they could have a missile on target before SK had time to react

                          but dat's a different topic

They'd definitely attack American soldiers stationed close to NK first, esp the ones in SK. So there's that.

Really disappointed that this was cancelled. My brother and I wanted to go see it. Meh.
