Re: Uncanny Inspiration
I don't want to be an ass, but people don't really care much about new musicians around here, do they? -
Re: Uncanny Inspiration
No they do, guess this thread was over looked. Have to say, at first I was a little confused by the midi-ish guitar, but then the breaks...This is actually pretty good.
Do you have a background in musical theory?

Re: Uncanny Inspiration
I guess it just takes a while for some people to give a small critique??
But, most of the time threads may be buried under the piles of "madmatt" threads and other topics. And most of the time people are just too lazy and only watch the feed on the front page. (maybe, i'm not really sure.)
Anyways -
Not bad, right off the bat there is a mastering issue.
The beginning guitar has too much reverb for my taste, but the main thing is your guitars sound like they are all over the place(in terms of hz). You prolly just need a better DAW for your guitar sounds.
I'd go ask StoneMcknuckle for advice on that.
Parts where the percussion is just keeping the beat need to be more in the background since it covers up the guitar melody.

Re: Uncanny Inspiration
Thanks. Hahaha... If you think this guitar is mid-ish, I can't imagine what you would call the thing I used as guitar in my first few songs XD
Getting a good electric guitar sound is hard... Damn.
Not formally. I guess I have good notions due to listening to lots of music. I'm good at making melodies, but people in general seem more concerned about mastering/mixing and instruments, which I'm still learning about.
Well... People seemed to react a lot more quickly to other threads created after this one (two days ago). I don't think anyone would have posted if I hadn't made another comment, either. But, whatever. It just gets frustrating when I have to bump nearly every thread I create, that's all.
I think I'll ask him, then. I've been struggling with guitars since the beginning. It's really annoying (and I actually thought those sounded good, lol)Anyways -

Re: Uncanny Inspiration
This is the main problem with all electronic artist. We have to produce music and create it.
If you had performed this piece mastering would be the least of your problems. People will listen to anything acoustic(or just performed); most of the time.

Re: Uncanny Inspiration
I wouldn't call this a guitar but oh well, let's just roll with it. I'll type as I listen through it.
Right off the bat I can tell you there's way too much low-end. Low-end is fine on rhythm guitar, but even there you don't want tons of it as the bass track starts a fight if too many things occupy the same frequency range. I don't know if you did this or not, but try to have two guitar channels, one for rhythm and one for lead, and then tone down the lead's low-end. Also I'm also good at putting exaggerated amounts of reverb everywhere, but I think you're overdoing it a little too much here. Reverb is awesome, but you shouldn't put it on every channel.
Okay, now your lead seems to be playing like directly one octave above the rhythm guitar or something like that which makes it really confusing to listen to. Try to make the rhythm guitar occupy whichever is the lowest octave you can go without making it sound like ass. Also, lowering the note duration to fake palm mutes is almost never a good idea. I can understand why you did it as I used to have the same problem before I purchased better equipment, but I'd probably try to just lower the velocity of the notes you want muted instead. Perhaps lower velocity + ever so slightly reduced note length will work. Either way, leaving them at full velocity and reducing the note length by too much is going to sound awful no matter what. Also, your bass track disappears entirely for some reason like halfway into the song for a while. wut? also those pads or strings or whatever they are that pop in towards the end take up way too much space, you need to tone them down a bit.
If you have Kontakt player I can suggest using these super-amazing starter libraries. All of them were released by Theodor Krueger for free on his site, after which they were all taken down for some reason. They're very light-weight and, considering they're free, almost unbelievably versatile. Theodor has a video up where he demonstrates at least one of these. I uploaded two starter drumkit soundfonts as well since they're bound to sound a hell of a lot better than what you're using in this song. The Blue Jay kit is much higher quality than the Slavo kit, but Slavo has a heavier sound.
Some of my threads have little to no posts at all either. Hell, I've seen a couple of OHD threads with hardly any posts at all and that guy's awesome. There actually was a discussion about this in one of KgZ's threads earlier, where I explained why I don't post in every thread even though I try to listen to everything that's posted here. I think people are a little too reserved when it comes to criticism, or only interesting in hearing music they think is good.Well... also just fyi it feels like you're posting a song every day so I actually hadn't even noticed this thread l0l
edit: I should probably tell you to keep at it anyway since you're still improving and it's interesting to pop in every once in a while to listen to how you're doing.
you're better than I was when I'd first started, but you need mixing experience and/or know-how, and better tools. it's a hell of a lot better being limited by your own skill than by your tools.Last edited by StoneMcKnuckle; 06-18-2013, 06:56 PM.Comment

Re: Uncanny Inspiration
Thanks! I don't have Kontakt, but I downloaded the soundfonts you provided. I think the problem with the reverb is that I used the "mastering for strings" preset, because I thought it sounded good, and it has reverb in it.
I used two channels for the guitar (well, three, if you count the more acoustic sounding one used in the beginning of the second chorus). I'm using some guitar samples that came with FL Studio 10 and the Hardcore plugin (because I never found any good electric guitar VST)
(I actually thought that my situation was a bit better by now, haha...)Last edited by Zaevod; 06-18-2013, 08:29 PM.Comment
