It is NOT ****ING NOT ****ING NOT ****ING DRAGON BALL Z.

    It is just DRAGON BALL.

    They are DIFFERENT.

Sweet Jesus people make this mistake far, far too often.

To be fair, I don't think the distinction is worth getting worked up over. Not in as loose an adaptation as this. Hell, for all we know, Vegeta and Freeza will show up and Goku will go Super Saiyan 3 before even defeating Piccolo.

Anyway, the tail-end of the Dragon Ball anime was more like Z than the rest of Dragon Ball. And in the source manga, there was no actual distinction between the two eras.

        Re: Dragonball Z leaked photo

Oh, I realize. It was just Dragon Ball across the board until the TV was produced, then they tacked the Z on to differentiate.

My main problem, though, is that this is not a Dragon Ball Z movie and most of the posters here seem to fail to grasp the concept that there was a Dragon Ball before there was a Dragon Ball Z. I read the Dragon Ball manga when I was in middle school and still into that kind of stuff way before I got into Dragon Ball Z, and it just frustrates me that people think that an inferior product is the end all be all of the franchise. I loved - and still love - Dragon Ball. When people call the movie the Dragon Ball Z movie, it makes me face-palm.

Piccolo is the villian in this. He's still evil Piccolo. Not just, vengeful-fued-with-Goku Piccolo, but I've been imprisoned for thousands of years/dark side of the elder Namekian Piccolo. This Piccolo only existed in the Dragon Ball continuity. So people that are bitching about Piccolo being the villian, or Piccolo looking wrong are just bitching because they don't know their basic frakkin' history when it comes ot this stuff.

        That's all.

It is a Dragon Ball Z movie. They wouldn't adapt Dragon Ball on its own, it's simply not that popular of an anime. But DBZ, they'd love to adapt. The problem here is that Dragon Ball Z is a "sequel", so they have to set things up. So they'll do one movie that collapses all important elements of Dragon Ball into a single film, then they're able to adapt DBZ for film.

To be completely honest, I'd say the tone started shifting during Piccolo Damiao's appearance, and by the time Goku fought "Ma Junior", the tone was basically completely in line with what would come to be representative of Z.

And like I said, the end of Dragon Ball is more like Z than what preceded it. And this film is clearly more related to the end of Dragon Ball; notice lack of Pilaf, and I'd wager to guess that the majority of the movie will not be slapstick questing for Dragon Balls or silly training exercises. They're not making this film because they wanted to adapt Dragon Ball into live action; they're making this film because they wanted to adapt DBZ into live action.

Are you talking about the differentiation between Piccolo Daimao and his offspring that went on to fight Goku at the end of Dragon Ball, then fight by his side throughout Z?

Since Dragon Ball is canon with Dragon Ball Z, I would say that Piccolo Daimao definitely existed in the DBZ continuity. He's referenced many times thoughout the anime (although the dub downplays this).

Oh, and by the way, Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z was a villain throughout his fight with Radditz, and kept evil intentions even as he trained Gohan for the fight against the Saiyans. His sacrifice for Gohan softened this hard edge a bit, and his fusion (read: absorption) of Nail cut it more. But it wasn't until he recombined with Kami that he stopped having evil intentions. The dub just downplays his darkness. The same thing can be seen with Vegeta to a more pronounced degree. In the dub, Vegeta seems to have become "good" by the time he is revived and lives on Earth. He's a mean guy, but he's good at that point. But the original Japanese anime has him being far rougher throughout, and I'm pretty sure that it's only when Cell kills Trunks that he cuts the evil ****.

              Re: Dragonball Z leaked photo

I never bothered with anything but the DBZ dub and a few of the movies - Dead Zone and the like.

So, people are going to know all that? Everything that you and I just said?

No. Because DBZ - what most people are familiar with, myself included, the dub - is vastly inferior and cuts many, many important items out of the continuity.

And you're very wrong about them not being able to just jump into a DBZ movie - that's how most people got in to the series, without knowing of Dragonball. I would wager that it would be even more popular, as the general population and idiot parade has no idea that a Dragonball preceded the Z.

As for saying this is a DBZ movie - if it was, they would call it that. DBZ is far more well known than just DB, and if they wanted to, they could just tack the Z on at the end of the title. But they didn't. Because it's not a DBZ movie, and for whatever reason, they wanted to start with DB. And it's fine if they want to name the sequel DBZ or whatever, but saying that this is just the first step towards DBZ is just... not gelling very well. Everything is the first step towards something else.

The point is, they didn't mislabel it. It was intentional. TPTB could have avoided all this confusion, all this mess, had they just thrown the Z at the end.

              But it was a choice.

If it's a Dragonball movie then shouldn't Goku be a kid? Unless it just focuses on the very end of Dragonball.

Most people know Dragonball Z better because it was dubbed first. DBZ was dubbed in 1996 and DB wasn't until 2003 or so.

Actually, the first attempt at a dub of Dragon Ball happened in the early 90s or maybe even the 80s. It was a massive failure though. The **** didn't get popular 'round here until DBZ was dubbed though.

                    Also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Ball

                    Says clearly:
"In 1995, Funimation Entertainment acquired the license for the series for broadcast and home video distribution in North America. Funimation contracted with BLT Productions to create an English voice track for the series, and the dubbed episodes were edited for content.[21] Thirteen episodes aired in syndication before Funimation canceled the project due to low ratings, switching to working on the second anime series Dragon Ball Z.[3] In March 2001, Funimation announced the return of Dragon Ball to American television, featuring a new English audio track produced in house and with less editing.[21][22]"

Mal, you gotta admit. Reptile man is not a good way of representing the Saiyan's transformed state. Giant werewolf monkey is much better.

I hope the picture isn't really Goku's Saiyan Ape form.

That being said, I think the vast majority are being far too judgemental.

It's a picture for godsakes. It's like judging a song off of a 2 second clip.

Edit: I bet they'll add CGI fur onto his body. (Simaler to how they are making Goku's hair.)
Picture that costume as just the base and add fur on top of it. It could look very much like the ape in the anime.

Mal, believe me. I've been defending this thing since day 1. But this is not a simple adaptation. That would be making Roshi not a pervert (and also have hair). That would be making Piccolo a light yellowy green instead of a deep green. That would even be removal of Krillin and the addition of Teto. That would be ****ing high school.

But no. Making the transformation for the Saiyan to be a man-sized reptilian monster rather than a giant monkey is huge and makes no sense. If they don't want to do giant, that's fine, but why make it NON-MAMMALIAN in appearance?

Honestly, I want to say this is one of Piccolo's minions or something, because that's just about the only thing for which this sort of appearance might be appropriate. But alas, he's clearly wearing the orange gi.

It's like judging a song off of a 2 second clip.
Not exactly. It'd be like a 2 second clip that makes your ears bleed... that is the "chorus" to the song. We're not looking at a small part here, we're looking at what will be a prominent element, and in fact, is one of the fundamental things about the universe in which the series takes place (at least during Dragon Ball and early DBZ).

EDIT: do you know how absurd it is to suggest they'd add CG hair to that? If they were going to do that, it would be easier for them to do the thing as full CG. Do you understand how hard it is to make realistic looking hair in CG?

                            I'm just trying to shell out some hope for this movie. ;_;

I loved Dragon Ball as a kid, and I don't think they would depart so far from the original.
