Let me preface this review by saying that I DID read the book but it was like 10 years ago. That being said...this movie was fantastic. Lord of the Rings fan will especially like this movie due to similarities in that there are breathtaking landscapes, wonderfully rendered environments, GOOD CG characters, and an epic battle sequence up to par with LOTR.
Pros:
This movie succeeded by and large because there weren't very many well known actors. I recognized Tilda Swinton (the White Witch) from Constantine (as the archangel Gabriel) and from Vanilla Sky (as president of Life Extension) and she was AWESOME as the White Witch, Jadis. She excels at bringing the evil in her character out. Also many people may recognize Jadis's little right hand man dwarf as the Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He's quite funny in the movie. Anyway...the four children are relatively unknown British actors and none of their performances really stands out except for the youngest girl Lucy Pevensie (played by Georgie Henley). Her performance was staggering. Think Dakota Fanning only better.
The CG in this movie was mainly used for the animals and they did a wonderful job. The animals are extremely realistic and quite humorous. Aslan the lion (voiced by Liam Neeson) is so majestic and commands respect. I'm just gonna go ahead and say that every character in this movie was extremely well thought out and added to the whole movie experience.
The music was glorious. Harry Gregson-Williams (who also did the music for Team America: World Police, the Shreks, and Metal Gear Solid 3) SHINED in this film. It's unique is what it is. Beautifully composed and orchestrated, the music makes you feel like what's going on is important and is a huge aid in keeping your attention. Music is easily one of the most important features of a successful film and this my friends is a successful film.
Cons:
There may have been a little TOO much CG in this movie. I felt that the CG could have maybe been a little better quality and a little less frequent. Also, the movie (which clocks in at around 140 minutes) still seemed a bit rushed. I left the movie theatre thinking I had only been there for like an hour.
Final Thoughts:
I went into this movie with extremely high expectations and they were exceeded. I got chills, laughed, cried, and laughed some more. This is everything I wanted out of this movie and more. The best part is they left it open for a sequel and hopefully they'll do all 7 of the chronicles.
Final Rating:
9.1 out of 10
