I'm with Phynx and everyone else in the thread who said something along the lines of "who cares?". Too much dumb ass stuff in the media and its retarded how people get so sucked in emotionally to cases like this.

It was my aunt that told me she was found not guilty, and she's been following the case the entire time. I just kinda looked at her with a blank stare and said "Good.", I seriously could not care less for stories like this in the news...

Yes jury was retarded, and yeah she did it, but... oh well. If it bothers you that much that she walked away, go find her and kill her yourself.

Someone told me life in prison is more expensive. Do you know the validity of that claim? Also, how quickly would this money go?
Personally I am against the death penalty, but some people strongly believe that some criminals don't deserve to live.

Sometimes I really hate the "objectivity" of the courts, but ungh. Basically comes down to "better ten guilty go free than to wrongfully imprison one innocent." Needing to prove common sense is a pain sometimes.

that sums up what I'm getting from this whole thing. we all believe - including the jurors - that Casey is probably for sure almost definitely guilty of murdering her daughter, but the court system does not operate using that kind of conclusion. it's too bad in this case; however, finding people guilty based on "we're pretty damn sure, but we can't prove it" notions would lead to wrongful executions. the alternative to our current system would be the worse option imo. it's kind of a pick-your-poison deal though.

No, it's far, far more expensive to use the death penalty than it is to just house and feed someone for life.

It's really costly because of the nature of the legal system -- you have to make *damn* sure you do all the due diligence you can to ensure you're not putting an innocent person to death. All that extra legal groundwork is costly. There are tons of additional, expensive trials (and pre-trial motions, attorney fees, expert hiring fees, jury costs, etc) and higher costs associated with things like death row incarceration. Time value of money matters, too. It's more expensive to blow large loads early than it is to spend money over a life sentence where all you have to pay for is housing and food anyway, lol. The physical execution itself is not what's costly. It's just really costly to put someone to death within a Constitutional system that grants so many rights. You need strong reasons to justify taking all that away.

Nobody should have the right to judge anyone for anything. What we do depends on how much injustice we are exposed to in our lives. People who are poor tend to commit more crimes and such. Remove the unfairness in this world and u remove crime and 3/4 the mental problems. Just saying...
