I'm a recovering anime addict, and I will say parents, siblings, and pretty much everyone else who doesn't watch it (including me now), will think you're weird and instantly geeky and not really a good choice of person to talk to. If you want to watch anime, only talk about it online, and don't show off your manga collection or DVD sets. Just makes you look that much more of a geek.

And don't even think about the "WELL U DONT GET JAPANESE CULTURE THATS ALL" argument, since all that's going to do is make you turn into one of those weird ****ers who dress up in their favorite anime character's garb. Keep anime very private, My advice

I don't see any reason to do this unless you are trying to pretend to be someone you aren't If you like something there isn't any reason to hide it because it will probably end up attracting people to you that like similar things. If i like video games and computers I'm not going to pretend to be some *** who's obsessed with his car and rap music because those aren't the kinds of people i want to be around anyway.

Sure people who are overly obsessed with anime are annoying, but if you aren't overly obssesed with anime yourself then that isn't a problem because you probably wont attract those kinds of people. And even if you are overly obsessed with anime then you are probably fine with other people that are to.

In my experience, this is completely false.

Yeah I'm an anime fan, but a moderate one. I don't exalt Glorious Nippon and I can't name a Japanese voice actor besides Norio Wakamoto. And yet everyone I know who is interested in anime is the type of person who goes to every convention imaginable cosplaying as three different characters.

I've found that by downplaying my interests in historically-unfavorable things like anime or MMORPGs, instead acting like a typical person with typical interests (which I have, of course. Anime and video games aren't the only things I like), then I attract the kind of people that I would like to befriend. I don't want to be associated with the stereotypical anime fanboy or fangirl, because I don't like those kinds of people.

The best part is that when the people I like to be around do find out that I watch anime, they don't mind it at all because they know I'm not a shut-in nerd/pedophile whose greatest pleasure in life comes from watching cartoon characters. When they ask why I watch it, I answer with the truth: there are some things that just tend to work better animated than acted out. I have yet to have anyone reject this idea.

Well I've never tried to hide anything about myself and I found the perfect girl for me that way. So in my experience I've found it to be true. Sorry it doesn't work out that way for you guys.

I agree with that person who said to hide it from everyone. That is the best advice ever. The main reason is that people take it the wrong way. You end up lowering yourself down the social ladder, and you might get some weird anime kids with ADD as your best friend, even though you think he is annoying.

I agree with Izzy.

Anime isn't like a sexual fetish. That's something you keep to yourself. It's a form of media. If you like Westerns, do you hide that? If you like Spanish films, do you hide that?

I know there are certain connotations with anime being related to hentai or compared to cartoons, and that trying to explain to someone that it's a higher echelon of cartoons is impossible, but it's still not something you keep to yourself. Keeping it from your parents, sure. Your parents don't need to know. Your friends might want to know though. I would've never even found out that One Piece wasn't a terrible show had my friend not told me that the American dub and the original version were completely different and asked me to watch it.

If your friends leave you because you tell them you like anime, they weren't your friends in the first place.

I've never once even considered going to an anime convention. I know lots of people who enjoy anime who don't go to conventions. Likewise, I know several people who do go to conventions. One of my best friends enjoyed it so much that he decided to study Japanese Culture in college. He loved the culture so much that he spent an entire semester in Japan during his university studies. He wasn't really into anime--just the language and the culture.

So, there you go. Anecdotal evidence for all sides.

You know, I would absolutely love it if there were anyone like you and your friends in my area, but unfortunately there aren't. The only people I know have either typical interests or are so obsessed with anime that they can be difficult to be around. Probably something to do with the fact that everyone I know is from my high school, which is unkind to moderates in that cliques tend to form between people with the same extreme interests.

Of course, I'm going to one of the smartest/nerdiest colleges in the country in a couple months, so I'm sure I won't have that problem. And hey, I never said I actively -hide- my interests, but when I'm around friends who I know don't share those interests, I just don't bring it up. If I'm around friends who do share those interests, then I do bring it up. I have one friend with whom I talk about anime and WoW all the time. I don't have a problem with it because he also has those interests.

But I'm not going to talk about how Busou Renkin is a fun and actually fairly-touching show with my friends who go to the mall every day, listen to Dave Matthews Band, and use their computers for nothing more than Facebook.

I'm not totally obsessed with anime, but it's one of my greater interests, and everybody knows it. Most of the people I know just watch licensed anime and all that jazz, I go to Anime North every year and spend a lot of money on anime merchandise and stuff. Every one of my friends know this, yet I'm best friends with all of the jocks, all of the 'popular' people, even though they know about all of my strange interests. Anime is nothing to hide, like Izzy, I even found the love of my life thanks to it.

Haha, yes. I am one of those people who liked anime at first and took that love and developed it even more. I used it as a basis for my artistic talent and have pushed it far enough to be considered Fine Art rather than a cartoon drawing. I also love Japanese culture in general now.

The fashion. The music. The history. The language.

Although it does annoy me to talk to people that exalt Japan as the "best country in the world". And those people are usually anime-obsessed fanboys/girls that know **** to nothing about Japanese culture.
