I think it is pretty common that anyone who watches anime in countries where it isn't really popular are presumed to be a bit weird. The only places anime air is cartoon channels. So all animation is pretty much regarded as cartoons to the average person so adults watching it is seen as very strange.

My brother calls it all 'chinese crap' and refuses to even view any anime to change is mind.

My mother doesn't seem to mind much but I tend to hide any anime I am watching if people come in simply because it holds a low social status and I am also worried if a risqué part appears while I am talking to them rofl.

It's all just ignorance and hate for the unknown.

I'm sure people give you guys strange looks when they hear high-pitched voices speaking in a way they wouldn't normally hear (not Japanese, but words that people wouldn't use in a normal conversation).

My dad makes fun of it. My mom doesn't care. My brothers like anime as much as I do, though. My boyfriend likes it as well, surprisingly. Practically all of my friends are into either anime or American comics... video games and whatnot. I'm surrounded by nerds.

But anyway, uh, my parents don't hate it or anything, they like it sometimes. You know, when it's actually something really good like Hayao Miyazaki's films.

this is just as bad as saying anime is gay. There is some anime that is absolute crap, and there is some anime that is good. I'm sure there is something out there for everyone.

I was wondering, do your parents/siblings get kind of weirded out that you're into anime, including collecting merchandise, buying dvds, reading manga etc.?

I mean parents being unfamiliar with an American culture is one thing but damn a foreign culture?

I'm a recovering anime addict, and I will say parents, siblings, and pretty much everyone else who doesn't watch it (including me now), will think you're weird and instantly geeky and not really a good choice of person to talk to. If you want to watch anime, only talk about it online, and don't show off your manga collection or DVD sets. Just makes you look that much more of a geek.

And don't even think about the "WELL U DONT GET JAPANESE CULTURE THATS ALL" argument, since all that's going to do is make you turn into one of those weird ****ers who dress up in their favorite anime character's garb. Keep anime very private, My advice
