Also, anyone currently on any medication to help them sleep, like Lunestra? I'm calling my doctor today to ask for recommendations but I figured you guys might have some suggestions yourselves.

ps Caffeine probably isn't an issue, considering I'm pretty tolerant from it for the most part. The most I get is a Red Bull and that only has 80mg.
I haven't avtually been to the doctor yet, but I think I have insomnia, and so do my parents. I can't find anything that helps.. I can't even figure out why it's happening. It has slowly gotten worse over the years, so I dunno. Don't most sleep medication carry risk of dependency? That's the only thing that would hold me back.

You posted this around the same time I was waking up from a splitting back pain after spending 2 hours laying in bed trying to get to sleep.

I know what you're talking about and the best thing I can do to get myself to sleep is to do something up until the moment I fall to sleep. Some things work better for some people. Just about everyone I know reads. Me personally, I sit and play a very slow-paced RPG and usually try to spend the night stealing a new item from an enemy or something; between the boredom and the rut you get in repeating the same thing, you eventually fall to sleep with the TV on and the controller in your lap. Also, TV glow helps some people fall to sleep.

I go to lay down and it just seems like my brain won't stop thinking. Then I can't sleep at all.

I'll give the exercising a shot before bed though, so we'll see how that helps.
You should try a lot of white noise.
I turn on my radio and my TV, and sometimes I'll unplug the cable in the TV so it's just static. If you can't get to sleep though, just make sure you keep busy and awake when you need to the next day. Eventually you'll be so exhausted you'll crash in under 5 minutes.

Re: Anyone battling insomnia/having trouble sleeping come here

I always think about things I need to do, things that happened that day, or even months before.

Sometimes I'm anxious about things happening the following day.

I take 225mg of Effexor daily, and it gives me nightmares.
                Really messed up ones too.

It takes me anywhere from a half hour to an hour ( usually ) to fall asleep.
                Sometimes even longer.

It's even worse when I am unable to sleep at all.

I try to breathe deeply to calm myself down.
I also try to concentrate on relaxing each part of my body.

Another thing that I heard works for most people is doing enough physical activity throughout the day so you pretty much just collapse at bedtime.

And actually I have heard that masturbation releases chemicals which make you tired.

I usually don't have trouble going to sleep. However in the event I do have trouble I find that reading a book for a while relaxes me enough.

Re: Anyone battling insomnia/having trouble sleeping come here

Masturbating only helps calm the nerves, it doesn't do much for putting you to sleep.

Perhaps having a more active lifestyle that is physically demanding will help tire you out.

If not, it seems the computer is the sole source of distraction for you at night. Go unplug your router and then go to sleep. Forums, music, etc is distracting.

Ugh, ever have those times when you wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep then when you finally do 3 hours later the alarm goes off. That's happened to me about every night this week.

Go to bed and listen to your favorite music until you're dying to sleep.
                              It works for me.

Re: Anyone battling insomnia/having trouble sleeping come here

I suffered from insomnia years ago. My pattern used to be:

Stay up until 5-6am - sleep for an hour or two - go to school - sleep in school - Go home and sleep - Stay up until 5-6am.

Etc. For a couple of years. It's a horrible condition and unfortunately I still have little spats of it that coincide with my phobia. I just cope with it by only getting, on average, 6 hours of sleep a night.

Try taking your mind off things as you go to bed. Either watch TV (or have it on in the background) or music or whatnot. The other strange thing that sometimes can work is just to daydream, but make them as detailed as possible. Usually the best ways to get detailed include "what if I was invisible" and "what superpower would I have and how would I use it", stuff like that can help you drift off through thinking of pleasant things.
