As one who has never taken official Japanese education, I would like to keep myself void of all incorrect Japanese. I rely on books, manga, anime, drama, music, internet, etc. to achieve my Japanese knowledge. It would be helpful if people like dag12, suika510, and jimerax spoke to me in Japanese, but I don't need to bother them now, do I?

        Re: Do you know English?

That's pretty interesting, and a little harsh. But now that I think about my neighborhood and the people that speak around me (within a 20 mile diameter...) I feel they deserve to take this test for their complete butchery of the English language.

People aren't things. Use "who" when referring to people, not "that". =D

Also for anyone curious, Arch didn't triple post. The posts he replied to were deleted.

Whenever I see this thread, I get this fleeting image of Samuel L. Jackson. . .

            Crazy.

Noticing from yesterday, this thread appears to have gone from discussing the fact that immigrants are being pushed to the limit, English-wise, to "I'm sorry to say, but you suck at grammar bud."

Same here...except my grandpa is Japanese...so I have a little bit of an advantage there :P (thus I have learned that by saying "nihongo o wakarimasu" you are basically referring to the action of understanding, while "nihongo wa wakarimasu" is referring to the capability to understand...thus both work ^.^)

Have you taken / do you know what the TOEFL is?
If not, get better at English than the moderators on this site than come back to this thread proclaiming your magical Japanese skills.

It was funny the first time you posted a foreign language, maybe even the second. It went from a joke to a bash-fest between you and Midday.

Since when was this thread titled "Do you know Japanese"? (side note: is it ?" or "?; also is the same rule true for commas?)

Anyways, I think immigrants in general should be forced to acquire at least a minor grasp of the national language; while some accommodation can be made, there is a point where enough is enough. As long as effective communication is possible, though, there's no point making everyone a de-facto expert in (of?) the nuances of English.

I wipe your advantage with my 100% complete pure Japanese family tree. All of my relatives including the parents with whom I live, are 100% Japanese. I am the first generation to be brought up outside Japan. My parents know Japanese, have studied Japanese in Japan, and have been brought up in Japan. I'm sure they won't make some silly grammatical mistake that can be found only in a first grader's sentence.

                        1) 日本語わかります. There is absolutely no way you can use in any context of that situation. o is never and will never be a helping verb.
                        2) 日本語をわかります has no subject. Therefore, it's grammatically incorrect. I have the back up of both parents, and a Japanese text book, as well as a bunch of natural and inherent sound instincts that say that this is definitely wrong. Like saying, "Your car are red." It's as wrong as that in my ears. If you were to use 日本語を, you have to add a direct object or a noun constituting an action. For instance, 日本語を理解する.
                        3) On the other hand, 日本語はわかります refers to "I can understand Japanese" and implies that you can't understand something else, which is exactly what you were trying to say before. You can understand Japanese but not English.
                        4) The most correct way to just say you can understand Japanese is 僕 (any subject is fine) は日本語わかります.
                        5) Ask jimerax. I am 5000% positive he will side with me. Or blueberry27 for that matter.

                        6) Yes, I'm sorry for bringing this thread off-topic.

If making everyone in America an expert in English were a criteria then 98% of the American population would be somewhere else right now.

Barista, stop making up weird Japanese. Drink movies? There are movies inside bird meat? What?

And I agree with sumzup. Language is a means of communication. As long as the other person understands what you mean, I don't really mind. The only problem is, on the common level, there is a certain requirement that makes a person look intelligible over stupid. That's all there is to it for me.

There's a rule on our forum.

If you want to write in Japanese, you cannot use Romaji.

                              That is all.
