    Re: This is frankly saddening

It's not my place to decide what is art and what isn't.

I can see what the man was trying to do. It obviously worked, because here were are, some random forum board, talking about it.

Yes it is sad that some dog had to die in the process, but I don't feel this ridiculous outrage that some of you seem to be feeling.

Does it fall within the realm of animal cruelty? Yes. Is this man some sadistic killer? Probably not. Expression comes in many different forms.

You people need to stop being so ignorant and start realizing that your close-minded circle of beliefs and ethics do not apply to the whole world. You have no right to judge other people's beliefs. Especially when the cause for change is coming from a complete different culture.

That worked well with the Crusades didn't it.

Not that I'm trying to draw comparisons on all fronts there, but come on people. You are way too emotional. Start thinking logistically, and start separating logic and emotions.

I just like watching the point go over so many heads.

In my mind, it makes a funny "Whoosh!" type noise, like a washing machine dropped from a low-fuel B-52 over a flaming sea of ironic ignorance.

That noise is slightly more high pitched, for whatever reason, than a typical washing machine dropped from a low-fuel B-52 over a regular sea of ignorance, or even a regular sea of salt water.

Is it animal cruelty? Perhaps. Am I going to sign the petition? No.

Animals die like this every day on the streets. This dog would have shared the same fate (according to the article). Messages from artists like this make people feel a sort of humanity, or makes them feel like they want to make a difference. It's why you signed the petition. Would you have done anything about starving dogs on the street any other day? Probably not. Now that you're thinking about it, isn't it a little bit more important to you? It is to me. He's trying to make people aware, more than anything. Instead of petitioning against his message, why don't you guys spend your energy trying to help dogs on the streets get adopted into better homes? What about volunteering at a shelter, or donating money? What about adopting a dog yourself? You probably won't, because it's too much effort or time or money for you. But signing an online petition which takes 30 seconds isn't, so you'll do it, even though the message this artist is trying to get across to you all went completely over your heads.

He was sending a message as stated by people who actually got it. I guarantee a month from now none of you will even care about this, let alone remember it.

Yeah, its sad, oh well. It happens every day. Unless you plan on becoming a true activist, quit attacking people who were giving you the flipside.

The fact that animals starve and die on the streets doesn't need to be actually represented by starving an animal. There are other ways to get the information out.

That's like putting a baby with a heart defect on display to die to get out the information that genetic heart defects need more research. Granted it's a more extreme example and I'm not equating the life of a dog to a human, but it's similar in process.

                    Re: This is frankly saddening

I think this is a great example of how people can care, but not really do anything for a situation (also shown by Milgram's famous experiment. Though the situation for the experimental base is entirely different, you can see how they are similar). A person sees something that they very likely know isn't good, something they could change, but don’t.

Because the "art" was placed there by an artist of sorts, they feel they don't have the authority or right to do so. It isn't their dog, it's his. He chose to starve it. You can’t be certain that they simply don’t care; in fact as people have demonstrated on this topic, the majority of people react badly to it. In fact, some people there even asked for the animal released, but they took “no” for a suitable answer. The artist probably made a lot of money from this.

As for you people who go “Everyone who didn’t act is just as much to blame” – One: It’s been psychologically proven that most people react this way in these kinds of situations. Besides, it’s not really their responsibility. Two: If you think it –is-their responsibility, what about all those calls for charity? Do you donate? You could say that every person who doesn’t donate to charity is “letting people die” in Africa, and is by extension responsible for every death that could be prevented.

Really, life doesn’t work like that. Personally, I would have probably wanted the dog freed. I don’t deny that it’s unimportant, I don’t deny that it doesn’t happen everywhere anyway, but there is a principle about it. No one should starve to death on the whim of another. Sure, it can happen because you have no food, but that’s called nature. Starving an animal for the sake of it, that’s just unnecessary.

Dictionary.com defines art as "the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance," and I consider "ordinary significance" to be a point of view, and strongly believe in Voltaire's quote that supported freedom of expression. However, I fail to understand how one thinks that abusing another creature will get a positive reaction out of the masses. What do I mean by positive reaction? A positive reaction can be, "This sure looks good," or, "Wow. This is really radical and different from the current trend(s)." However, "Oh, what a sick mother****er!" isn't my definition of a positive response.

Any response to this type of thing generates publicity.

I'd still be rather messed at how people responded to my art.

Then again, this really makes me think of how people want to be perceived. Personally, if my "audience" isn't happy or has bitter responses, I feel bad. I've seen many cases where (what is considered to be the majority) audience is pissed at a person or group for their actions, and that person/group is sitting on top of the world. Diving players in soccer performances of all levels is a prime example IMO.

So, pull a healthy, well-fed man off the street and starve him to death.

Yeah, that's a direct correlation to showing a dog that was going to die anyway.
