I say get a good lawyer and try it. Ask yourself this: Is there ever enough evidence to PROVE that you did something you never did?
The judge better be pretty damn sure before sentencing you to anything.

This is what I'm thinking, but how expensive would it be to get a lawyer? The cost of a lawyer would probably be more expensive then if i had just bought out the claim...basically I'm spending money simply on a point of pride.

At the same time I still do plan on fighting this as of now, would it be a terrible idea to represent myself without a lawyer in court? I consider my self a very good public speaker, and i'm very comfortable in front of crowds, but at the same time I'm still just a 17 year old teenager, which will probably work against me.

Play it safe. Simply plead guitly, and pay the smaller fine, and keep your license. I know it sucks, but unless you are 1000% sure you know who was driving the car, and if they're trying to scam you out of your money, then I wouldn't take the chance.

That sucks, I would probably fight in court, but 5 years without driving, ouch!
They wont have enough proof, but it is always a good idea to play it safe.
Since the money isn't as much of a big deal.

And drugstore yes i do drink and smoke pot, but i hadn't done either of these in well over 24 hours. Also there were 3 other sober people in the car when we left. We definitly didn't hit anything.

Go to the guy who is pressing charges with all 3 of your friends. Ask the guy if any of those 3 or yourself is the person he talked to. Problem solved.

Better yet, bring 3 completely different people and ask the accuser. (or a group of people who were and weren't there, kind of like a line-up)

At this point you have one choice and I know you've mentally accepted it. You have to buy out the claim. It sucks, and obviously someone isn't telling the truth, but it's your only option.

Lol thanks for all the responses guys but i figured it out on my own anyways. I'll send some credits anyways and update the first post with what i sent.

There's no damage on my car whatsoever, and i finally realized the police officer i talked to is just using scare tactics. I called him back, told him there's no way it was me, that the situation was bull****, that i had 3 witnesses willing to go to court, and that i'm not paying a penny. He actually lightned up after that and tried talking about the hockey game...**** canada is weird.

I'm just gonna wait and see what happens, I'm not worried about it anymore, i talked to my uncle who works in car insurance and he said there's no way i'll have to pay a cent.

LIFE LESSON: police officers are dicks. it's just procedure. Stand up to them and they've got nothing.

oh and to everyone who posted suggestions about physical attributes, clearly the witness did see me get into the car, since he knew it was a male driver. It's just a case of fraud - probably some people bought a smashed up car for cheap, got someone to play "witness", and waited for a group of teenagers who look easily liable.

They probably even got a picture of me just to remember what i looked like. It wont hold up in court though i'll be fine, i've got 3 witnesses who will swear under oath, so this can be closed.
