It's a genetic disorder. Nothing the parent can do about it...they simply got very very unlucky. Harlequin fetus's tend to die almost immediately or a few days after birth. There are virtually no cases of survivors (insanely rare). The disorder itself is pretty rare, at about 1 in a million if I recall correctly.

Reach, you are extremely right, after dedicating most of my life to FFR and studying extremely rare and deadly diseases (or parasites), I came across this one and looked into it for about a week, but you summed it up pretty well, did you study this or something? And if you want more grotesque diseases you can ask me for more, and btw it is a genetic disorder which is extremely rare and there have been NO survivors for more than 3 years, which was only one kid, and all the others die instantly almost or within a few days, the kid that they said lived till 18 has another type of icthyosis, not harlequin

I do agree that it's a terrible thing, but I think we should be putting money into other things as well.

Cancer affects millions, for example.

And there's other things which are simply socio-economic and don't need a cure to be found, like poverty.

Those are both things that affect millions, the latter even billions.

Then there's also mental disorders, which for many people like myself, there isn't really any hope in sight, since the brain is the most complicated part of the body and the part we know least about.

Not to say that this horrible disorder shouldn't be cured, but there are so many other things, much more widespread, that require our attentions.

Already been answered.

And while it's horrible, it's less horrible to the child than to the parents. The child will be in agony for a short period and then die. And one in a million means 1000 in a billion, so we're likely to have only about 6700 or so worldwide.

Please don't misunderstand, I think it's a terrible disorder and I feel for the parents and child that must endure it, but the good thing is the child probably won't suffer for long and it doesn't happen regularly.

Same here, I agree, no one will ever be able to cure my aspergur's syndrome, which can get very annoying (it is a mental disorder) or my severe bipolar clinical depression, which I need 7 meds a day just to supress it, so yeah, we should but people already are giving money for cancer, autism, and depression to find a cure but it would just be a thought

my Mom and I completely agree, the first time we looked into this, people have been trying to keep the babies alive longer, for days, some for weeks, and we think that's horrible, its in so much pain and will never live normally let alone survive, just kill it, but that's where religion comes in, damn christian catholics from the South (NOT ALL OF THEM, DON'T WANT TO AFFEND ANYONE) won't let us kill it and end its misery, their always against pulling the plug, but sometimes it needs to be pulled, don't let the poor thing suffer, send it to god (I think we should move this now to critical thinking...lol)

Sorry to be a dick and throw this post off topic, but there are so many grammatical errors in that sentence. Please stop trying to tell us that youre intelligent.

On topic again. Im a devout Catholic but I believe that our religion isnt entirely based off of what God would want, but rather what we feel is the "right" thing. I dont want to sound like Im badmouthing our leaders, but we must ask ourselves, "What would Jesus do?" Surely, the answer would most likely be to let the baby end its suffering and enter the kingdom of Heaven. Also, if the doctors would just let it die instead of trying to help it, it wouldnt necessarily be killing it. Although I can understand where someone would get that idea.

In whole, we should just consider ones amount of suffering and take that into consideration when making the all important decision of pulling the plug.

Just my 2 cents.

i hate that some of you are calling nasty or disgusting...that's sad =[
yea it's not the most attractive thing in the world
but it is a disorder...and some ppl need to learn to have compassion
and there are worst abnormalities
even continuing with the whole fetus thing
there was a site i found years ago that had pics of then in jars...a bit scary

Damanwithdaskillz, I am appalled by the fact that you question the legitimacy of his "humanity". He was born by a human female, right? Fertilized by a human male sperm, correct? That makes it a human baby. Just because he has a deformity does NOT make him any less human than anyone else. I should have expected more from you.
