    Re: FFR: On The News?

CNN and Fox are both terrible, right now I hate CNN more for broadcasting an article on ghosts and calling a lens flare a "Ghost Orb"

Synth you live in Chicago you should have went and been on TV.

It's pretty cool though to be a part of something and you find out that it's on TV.

        Actually, you're verifiably wrong.

Accusations of media bias are common but are typically based upon nothing more than subjective standards and anecdote. A brilliant new paper by Tim Groseclose (GSB Stanford, currently visiting GMU) and Jeff Milyo (U. Chicago, Harris School) pioneers a more promising approach. Since 1947, the interest group Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) has tracked how […]

Moreover, although Fox News: Special Report was to the right of the median house member it was closer to the median member than were most of the other media outlets.

In other words? Fox News leans to the right, yes, but it's closer to the center than any other news network.

yeah I read about that and I would strongly question the methodology used. I don't think Congress is necessarily the barometer of political thought, and I wonder how the researchers went about deciding which statements to include and which not to.

but regardless of all that, my main beef with fox news stems from the fact that on a "news" channel they mix in many (admitted) opinion shows which are hilariously right wing.

I have a critical thinking thread I will be making soonish (maybe tomorrow, tonight would be iffy) to further expound on my thoughts on political bent in the media.

If Congress isn't the barometer of political thought, then we have much bigger problems to worry about than whether the news media is biased. Problems like "why don't our representatives share our political views?"

and I wonder how the researchers went about deciding which statements to include and which not to.
It says right there in the article - they included a statement every time a think tank was cited.

CNN and MSNBC do the same thing. Larry King? Paula Zahn? Chris Matthews? Anderson Cooper? Any of these names ring a bell? Yeah, Fox's opinion shows lean right. But everyone else's lean left. So who cares?

CNBC, a financial news channel, even shows Conan O'Brien reruns late at night. No one complains about that. (But Conan must be doing pretty poorly, if all those Fox news shows are really as "hilarious" as you claim.)

yeah... I know. Just because I hate fox doesn't mean I like CNN or MSNBC. personally I don't think there's any news source out there that's truly unbiased. About the closest I've seen is PBS.

I'd have to say C-SPAN is the most unbiased. They don't do any commentary of their own. They just show you what Congress is doing, and let you draw your own conclusions. Nothing is spoon-fed.
