This is one reason I am happy that everything important to me is either disc-installable or torrent-obtainable.

Oh, and something similar happened to the computers at my workplace. They had fatal errors which occured before the OS could load. Wanna know how I solved it? Popped in the XP disc, did a "repair" setup which reinstalls just the Windows files, and it worked fine.

In the end, it turns out the Surge Protector was messing with the power consumption and caused the HDD to receive less-than-necessary power.

I dont have an XP CD, it came with it. My dad got this laptop from a business.

Microcenter is just one place. You can call the geek squad, go to Best Buy (believe it or not, SOME of the tekkies there actually know what they're doing), or just look up a tech repair guy in your phone book. These guys are like handymen, only for computers- one guy in particular I know has saved us two or three times, and just like your problem, was something that the tech support retards said was SUPER SERIOUS and required a COMPLETE HARDWARE OVERHAUL and was actually something very easy to fix.

Well...I guess I could call up those computer guys. I don't know how good they'll be, they usually rip people off. Maybe you could ask the guy you talked to if he knows how to fix a problem like I have, if he'll give you advice for free =\

Same thing happened to me. It keept giving me an error that said umountable boot error. I installed another OS on it, and tried to read it, but no luck. Tried to repair it with the XP CD, and again, no luck. It's probably fixable, but will cost a couple grand.

Funny story about that. Seems I had the opportunity to actually join them.

Overpriced crap, especially laptops... The screens go out on them left and right.
