I just had my Evaluation with my managers at the pizza place I work at (Davanni's). I actually like working there, although it's hard as hell- we're the last actual pizza place in like, everywhere. You know how Pizza Hut and Dominos use packaged toppings and prebaked and cut crusts? Yeah, we don't. We're probably the last place that still hand tosses dough (it's fun, but a lot harder than you'd think) and slices our toppings fresh. While that makes pizza taste better, it means more work for us.

Anyway, I'm trying to get certified. That means (beyond being cool) that I get a $.50 raise, plus it opens the possibility to become a trainer, which is another $1./hour or so. Coolio.

And to all the people who are like OMG I WAN 2 WURK @ BEST BUY N SELL COMPUTURS, I have but this to say to you: Good luck. You're not the only tech geeks in the world that think they know computers. I had the same visions, but it's insanely hard to get your foot in the door with such a flooded industry. Trust me, I know. Plus, even if you do score a job, like Squeek, you'll probably end up shoving boxes for the first year of your employment.

And from what my friend says about Papa John's, they still hand-toss dough and such. I don't know about the cutting of the toppings. But I do hear him complain about not being able to do some forearm throw thing properly.

I have decided not to work in the computer field UNLESS I am behind a computer screen the entire time. AKA, tech support or System Administrator SOMEWHERE. I will never work computer retail again.

It's good advice, folks. I know many people here know very much about computers. Truth is, retail stores don't care what you know about computers. They want to know how fast you can memorize the store layout and policies. I memorized the store easily. The policies and things I have to do all the time are insane to memorize. I urge all FFR users to get their first job at a non-busy location that requires VERY LITTLE intelligence. I know it's belittling, but trust me on it. I WORK IN A CRAFT STORE.

Good luck on whatever jobs you folks are looking for. Try to steer clear of retail.

I've always wanted to work in retail and food for the sake of having worked at least once in those fields, but then I think about how I could get a good job instead.

My job experience:
Grades 9-12: Worked at an elementary school after-school program. Summary: I played with kids all day every day. Cheap, but easy

This past summer: I worked as a parts runner for a local HVAC company. Summary: Cheap, but easy and I got my foot in the HVAC door and got to know several engineers.
Worked as an RA at a summer program. Summary: Hung out with some of my best friends and played with (slightly older) kids.

I think everyone should be required to work in fast food at least once. It would be a much-needed lesson in humility. I worked at Arby's for a year while I was in high school. It's amazing what people will get upset over. We had a man smear a sandwich all over a glass door because he had asked for it with no mustard, but got it with mustard. Then he filled out a comment card calling the drive-thru worker about ten vulgar words.

Right now I work in a little restaurant / cafe place in my town. It gets pretty crowded with old people and more old people, but at least I don't have to talk to them. I do dishes in the back and it's not that bad, although I only have this job because it's close, I get good hours, and I know pretty much what I'll be doing each time I go there: Take cart of dishes into the kitchen/dishwashing area, unload dishes, wash dishes, put dishes away, bring cart back, get the other cart, repeat.
Occasionally when it slows down I'll chop salad or fill pancake butters, or even work the till if I'm lucky. I didn't have to apply to get hired there, one of the cooks just knew I was looking for a place to work and he was looking for a dishwasher. Since a dishwasher there only gets paid min. wage (7.16 here in WA), and I have NO chance for a raise, I plan on terminating this job as soon as I graduate this year and head off to college.

I worked at Arby's for a year in highschool and I don't think I ever saw mustard anywhere there.... hmm nevermind, honey mustard... :P

Highschool jobs suck. But, they do help in many ways.

Something to keep in mind if you are going to get a job in retail, especially at a place like Best Buy:

No one cares how well and efficiently you clean, or how much tech stuff you know.

All anyone cares about is how much you can sell. SELL SELL SELL. Even at Toys'R'Us we are pressured to sell more expensive toys, accessories, presales, and buyer protection plans (our individual sales of these last two are kept track of by our managers). I can hardly comprehend putting up with this kind of stuff at a place like Best Buy, where I am sure the pressure to sell is far far greater.

I am also very grateful for the fact that I have never had to work with food. I utterly refused to get a job in fast food when I was younger, and I do not regret doing so at all.
