Yeah don't ever buy a PC off craigslist. There's so many things they can avoid telling you and they're usually overpriced.

I'll agree with you that most of them are overpriced, although sometimes you can find some decent deals. But as long as you check out the computer, before you hand over your cash, you should be alright. Make sure the OS is genuine, all the parts are there, etc, etc. If you're not good with computers, then bring a friend along who knows his/her way around them. It's no different than buying a used car on Craigslist, there will always be someone who tries to sell you a lemon, but if you use your head you'll be fine.

One of my friends bought a computer on Craigslist two years ago. It's certainly no gaming computer but $250 for a minitower with 4gb of ram, a 3.0ghz dual, and a fresh W7 x64 install was a pretty good deal. Of course, I went with him to make sure that the seller was honest.

Some other people in this thread have built you some nice rigs for the price, so I don't think I need to do that, but if you find something and you're unsure if it's a good deal, post here or PM me if you want my advice.

I'm trying to find evidence of a game that uses true quad core parallelism, but it seems like the most advanced games can sometimes fully utilize two cores and minimally benefit from 4.

We generally run higher core counts with multiple GPU setups to avoid bottlenecks.

For $20 over your budget, you can get a machine that I built a year ago for $1150 (with monitor and OS). This one just doesn't have quite as much room to upgrade as mine.

Lol 16GB of ram is so useless. I would just recommend to go with the seperate parts that the people here had already recommended you. an i5 with a Radeon HD7870 or hell maybe 7850 as recommended could last you a good 2 years. It should be able to run Crysis on Ultra averaging anywhere from 40-60 frames a second and Battlefield 3 on ultra at probably around the same depending on how many players are on the map.

The performance difference for running a game on a quad core over a dual core assuming there was nothing else running on the computer would be 5% at best.

They can set different independent tasks to be on different cores, but true parallelism across multiple cores for the same task just doesn't seem to be there in video games. I assume the problem is synchronization in real time.

All Valve games use any amount of cores.

yo so bump it took foreva to get my tax refund back so yo some of the prices on those pc parts from back when i made the thread have went up in price so if theres some better deals that could happen now for the same 600-700$ budget then someone show me if not ill prolly go with the orange pony avatar dude from page 1 with the sandy bridge i5 whos name i forget

Well ok xd, i also need a new computer too, i already brought it but i`m waiting it arrive.
I was thinking in best option for cost/benefit

1. Radeon HD 7770 Vapor X 1GB GDDR5 128bit - 460R$ ( its like 230$ for you.. lol )
2. Water Cooler Corsair Hydro H70 - 256R$ ( 135$ ... )
3. 2x Corsair Vengence 4gb 1600mhz - 115$ (40$ .. )
4. Asus M5A78L-M LX 156R$ (70 $ for u...)
5. AMD FX 4100 3.6ghz - 290R$ (145$)
6. Thermaltake V3 Black AMD Edition - 174R$ ( 130$ )
7. any 600W + from corsair

Total: 1.200R$ ( 600$ ) without tax/shipping, energy source and HD (already have it)

That config run Battlefield 3 with Ultra Settings and Fraps(120fps) fixed in 60fps

thats what im running right now. its to the point where the fan kicks on and wont stop until it crashes, SM kills it after maybe 10 mins, cant play may flash or other pc games on it. even youtube lags on me.
