What is the point of doing anything if you think of it like that? The point is to finish it the fastest....faster than anyone else could. To have the bragging rights that he spent 1269 runs of the same game to achieve the fastest time possible. It's risk/reward.

But what is the significance of a speed run where the best time involves skipping the entire game.

I don't know how to make this any more clear.

To be fair, a ton of people who aren't familiar with speed-runs ask questions like these. Wouldn't it be more authentic to play through the whole game as intended and without glitches? Many games have glitches that can essentially make the games as short as 5 minutes (Pokemon Leaf Green, Zelda III: A Link to The Past, etc.). Obviously some of these glitches are easy to the point where anyone can do them and that is what prompts runners to develop other categories that ban the use of said glitches.

Now in OoT's case, the game has the wrong-warp glitch that warps you from the Deku Tree all the way to the end of the game which cuts off probably 3 or more hours of game-play. The reason why the run is still accepted as a worthy category to speed-run is because it's still incredibly technical and difficult to achieve a good time on (let alone finish the run).

this is the exact reason there are multiple categories/ways to speedrun a game, some which exclude glitches/warps that skip most of the game

Re: Cosmo gets new Ocarina of Time PB/WR

dynamo pretty much nailed the explanation lol

rather than thinking of it as a competition where you play video games, think of it as a competition where you try to break a video game as hard as you can. watching people break games is a different kind of appeal. it just so happens that once people figure out the glitches and steps to take, THEN they compete for fastest time

and like dynamo said, they do have categories of speedruns that ban glitches and such

yeah I like the way stargroup put that
"try to break a video game as hard as you can"

it's actually pretty amusing (to some people) looking at these older games that are more glitch-prone and spending years slowly uncovering little tricks, glitches, and warps and watching the theoretically optimal time shrink from hours to minutes
