Instead, it turns out I can withstand the Eggburst so I don't need the shield.

Eggburst + wolf kill or any sort of vigi, and you're dead. You're not immune to the eggburst, and I still can't figure out why you think you are.

Also, a FAR better plan would have been have one or both masons come out, and effectively sacrifice themselves to get the alliance going. Bit late for that now though.
