So totally unrelated, and I wanted to post randomly in TWG again, at the start of my shift today...

...Some guy came up to me and started talking my ear off about some sob story of misplacing his ID. After listening (not really) to this person's spiel, he asks me "can I have a free card?"

Now, it rarely happens, but I'm not a stranger to when people demand or openly ask for free prints because that's essentially what this guy asked.

I mean, I guess his sob story could be genuine, but...

I've never seen someone go in such elaborate detail of producing a sob story to get one of these cards. It baffled me, it confused me, and most importantly, it made what I thought to be another day at the Library more interesting.

So thanks, dude, hearts to you for making the start of my shift interesting. Hoping the crazy lady doesn't pop up today, I don't feel like listening more of her life story and her hitting on me. That just feels weird and I don't want to be rude because I'm at work.

For the record, the card's are only $1

So, y'know...

Complaining about the price of the card, which he did after I denied him, is sort of moot. 'Specially since we only charge 10 cents a copy and all. Not to mention we offer FREE INTERNET WITH UNLIMITED TIME WITH DATABASES AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC AND NOT JUST STUDENTS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO EVEN ACCESS

Every time I see this happen, I just go back to that woman who punched the printer because she didn't know what she was doing and thought it ate 10 cents of her card.

I've told the clerks that work here before that we probably would get less interesting characters if we implemented some sort of time system with our machines.

I mean, free Internet and you don't have to pay a dime to use it? The only thing hindering is the occasional block our firewalls have? YOU CAN LEGIT INSTALL SHIT ON THESE MACHINES WHICH I CAN'T EVEN DO ON MY WORK COMPUTER

We do it, and have been doing it even before I began working here two years ago.

Can you use a flash drive? I can't install or use external drives on my work comp ): lol
My hometown gives you 30 mins time to start
and if nobody is waiting, you can extend for 15 mins (they give you 5 min warning, then you extend) and you can do this twice for a total of an hour a day, that's it lol

Yeah, they can use flashdrives.

Remember, this library... is also an academic library. As in, the library is MAINLY for college students since we're on campus and have their brand and yadda yadda yadda

If it's a public library, I can see a 1 hour time limit being acceptable (if pushing it).

I think 2 hours is plenty for a random passerbyer.

I think 3-4 hours would be perfect for a STUDENT since, y'know, papers and probably gaps in between classes and whatnot.

But to give everyone unlimited?

Man...

Our library is a godsend, dohoho.
