Alt the problem with that is the only alternative to XP is Linux, and lots of people don't know how to work an open source server like that, don't know they have to buy special versions of programs, etc. The general public is going to buy what it gives them, and since Microsoft has a monopoly stranglehold on the computer industry that's what people will continue to use. As a result, the underdogs (like linux) will never grow to their full potential.

And don't even mention crapintosh...they're worse than windows.

Ad-aware is decent. Some spyware/adware will still remain to reside and torture you. If you want that gone it usually requires some registry editing/manual deletion. As far are altairians step one, putting any other windows OS is going to produce the same results. And no matter how much people think windows is a terrible os, its really not so bad, it is just targeted because so many use it.Here is a good procedure on how to avoid popups.

Step 1:Assumption: you dont know much about computers. This being the case the easier possible method to start with would be an OS restoration/format restoration.
Step 2:Get Mozilla, and or Mozilla firebird.
Step 3:Update and run ad-aware at least every week
Step 4:Use Internet Explorer as little as possible

Following these 4 easy steps it is likely that you will be able to keep your system clean of a vast majority of spyware and adware. (aside from cookies). Also..dont use kazaa, and be careful what you install.

Aren't you supposed to reformat your hardrive every month? I think it's suggested in the owners manual or something (Firned was telling me about it), guess it would work, but talk about a damn inconvinience.

A lot of people suggest that you format ever month. Its not neccesary, but it can help out a lot in the long run.

formatting every month is excessive. You should defrag once a month and format every 3-6.
