i myself play index, but spread is how FFR is made to be played basically, as all the new songs that have been coming in lately, and probably all future ones are meant for the skilled spread player.

IF you play one handed or index i recommend you to learn spread at one point or another to keep up. or be like me and only play FFR once in a while, go outside and have fun and stay in touch with the forums and the FFR Profile commenting system. works for me

    but yeah, spread owns ffr.

This makes so much sense. Though I believe my index style could possibly give me carpal tunnel one day ><. Index is advantageous for only certain patterns. Other than that, I find that 4f is more advantageous, which is in the harder songs. Im trying to learn 4f, but I just don't haev the coordination I do with index. Songs I can FC on index, I can't on 4f. It's depressing because I'll never be 1337 FFR.

Re: anyone else feel guilty playing four finger

I have a question: would it be considered illegal to play with four fingers, using the arrow keys? I use the index and middle finger per hand to hit these keys, but I don't know if that is allowed or not.

lol, would spread mean using the keypad and arrow keys? i do that on the hard songs, sometimes i use 2 hands on the arrow keys.

however, for the easy songs, or even the fun ones i use index, well... i call it index even though i use bothmiddle fingers rather than my indexes.

Spread/four finger is a good style because you have accuracy and sometimes even better speed than other styles.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned 2 hands 3 fingers. I think it's the average style, better than index , worse than spread.

I've been using one hand because it's just convenient if I'm in the middle of a song and I want to do something with the other hand, and also because whenever I play games using the arrow keys, that's the position I have my fingers in anyways. I also like one hand because I like giving myself extra challenges. I'm doing okay with 16th notes, I think I'll switch to 4-fingered when I get to songs with more 32nd notes. Then again, I'd eventually like to become one of the very few people who get super good with one hand.

There are no "illegal" playing styles. If you prefer 2 hands, 4 fingers, then feel free to play that way. That's my playing style as well. I've never played one handed.

Heh, I play 3 fingered with only 1 hand, so i'm not too bad at it i guess, but i suck to those people who use 2 hands... heh

I play 3 finger. Ring finger on right, index on left, and middle to cover top and bottom. I seem to get along just fine.

Ahh, thanks for answering my question Indy. Sorry I wasn't a bit more clear, but what I really meant to ask was: is this type of playing even ranked in terms of Stepmania lists? I know there is an index, spread, and one-handed category, but I think the way I play lacks categorization (four fingers on the arrow pad, no keyboard configurations)...

I generally use two to three fingers. Four seems like it would be harder because of missing the keys.

I take my reply back, and my progress on 4f spread is getting much better. There are still certain stream patterns/speeds i was better at on index, but that'll come with time. 1337 ffr here I come.
