JiZ voted everyone down who pointed out it was a terrible idea in the first place. Getting downvoted, if you haven't figured it out by now, isn't the effing point.

Here's a provocative thought challenge: Name one way, seriously just one, that this "feature" is beneficial to the site going forward? Don't worry. I'll wait.

Now I get that it's arbitrary and that downvotes are, more or less, just some passive aggressive way to say "I don't like you." And aside from the passive aggressive part, that's not a big deal.

But if the idea is to get more people back here or encourage newer folks to stick around, you're gonna have a hard time with that if some of these twits with their newly regained sense of "power," no matter how inconsequential it is, start downvoting people just because they can.

Y'all have literally set FFR back a decade by making it like a friggin high-school popularity contest again.

If used as negative reinforcement it can be effective but that would be more suitable as a post or thread down-vote rather than a profile to catch and deter behaviour at the time.

The vote on the profile, as far as I was concerned, was 'I like' or 'I dislike' (your profile). So rather than taking it as a passive-aggressive attack on your character, you simply take it as an indication of the suitability of your profile when viewed through a general consensus.

Treating it like that would mean it could be used as constructive feedback, effectively helping you to craft a better profile and lead a more fulfilling life.

Everyone knows that a downvote has never done anything right? It has always placed an entry in that user's thumb table that prevents you from voting on them in the future. It doesn't event decrease your thumbs up count.

@Zag: It was partially known I think since downvotes have always been implied as more of a social approval/disapproval. (i.e. I don't like this person's behaviour)
